    Rather annoying problem:

In my office, I manage a small network (7 machines varying Win OS's 95, 98, 2000 and XP) The XP machine acts as the file server, the network is entirely trusted so there are no passwords and all drives are shared.

The problem is that sometimes when a file (specifically a MS Word file) held in the XP machine is opened from the Win2000 machine, it is opened as read-only, but when I take a look at the properties of this file (and its containing folders) through the XP machine, it isn't read-only.

What can I do to make all files open not read-only all of the time?

    Please help.

Check security permissions on the files and directory tree...make sure that the share also give everyone full permissions...

I checked the permissions on the directory tree and some did say read-only... I changed it by removing the appropriate check mark, clicked OK and then checked again... the read-only check mark was back. What's going on?

I checked my user status and I am definitely an administrator. Why won't the directory stay not read-only?

I checked the drive share and everyone has permissions, after all files have been opened from the same machine over the network before and they haven't come up 'read-only'. It only happens sometimes... these files are even all held in the same directory.

Are you the OWNER of the files/directories?

    mjg,

Well, the files came from another computer originally... but I copied them to their current location. Surely when you copy files, who ever copied them becomes the owner....

How do you check for file ownership on Win XP?

I have just checked the properties of some other folders that I created for sure. They had read-only properties too. I tried to change them otherwise, but they keep on reverting to read-only...

I know I am an Administrator.... I am logged on... I have no password --could that be it? No password? I remember a while ago, with a WinMe system, my dial-up connection password was not remembered unless I had a username and password...

    I'll keep trying...

Have you tried rebooting after you change the settings to full share. also is there an ok button in the settings.
    Just a thought..
Or you might allow remote administration in your passwiords properties.
