I did a search, but didn't find what I was looking for, so if it was answered, forgive me. Hewee from Tech Support Guy had suggested this site.

I have IE 5.5, Netscape 6.2.1, Netscape 4.78 and Opera 6.0 loaded (in Win2000). I can make any of them my default browser except for Netscape 6.2. I wish Netscape made it as easy as putting a check box in the Preferences.

Anyway, I've modified the prefs.js to be False in:
    c:\program files\netscape6\users\randy; and
    c:\Documents & Settings\randy\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\randy\8illstev.slt;

Doing this in Net 4x works fine. But I can't find anywhere on Netscapes site to change it in 6x.

    Thanks for your help.

    Randy

Hi roverman, and welcome to the Forum!

Making Netscape 6.2 the Default Browser

Go to Edit | Preferences | Advanced | System.

On the right side of the window, check the boxes for the types of files you would like Netscape 6 to open.

At least "Hypertext Transfer Protocol (http:)" and "Secure HTTP (https:)" must be selected, in order for Netscape 6 to become your default browser.

Let us know if this helps, or if you have more questions.

    Thanks Ramona,
It works, except for one tiny problem. Everytime I click on a link, it goes through the setup program (again!).

I limited the default links to http:// and .html.

I think this is the same problem I have at home when I click on a link, it opens Netscape 6, then opens Eudora and ask what file to associate it with. Didn't know what that was before, but now I realize it is trying to download and install Netscape.

If you have any thoughts on this, thanks. I don't know if this qualifies as a bug for Netscape to listen to, but I might let them know as well.

    roverman,

Have you, at any time, had Netscape 6.0 or 6.01 on your system?

I know I'm guilty, but I'm trying to think about this.

I did before I've reformatted my hard drive, but I can't be positive since then, but since it has been around Sept., I'll have to say probably yes.

I just went looking around at the different locations.
This version was installed on 1/29, and it looks like I may have installed something around 1/8, so I'd have to say yes.

    roverman,

The reason I asked, is that Netscape 6.0/01 had an patch to use before uninstalling the program. This was due to the fact that Netscape took over file association for JPEG, etc. I'm just wondering if this might be part of your problem.

    Read HERE and then HERE

See if this relates in any way.

I'll look into these, maybe uninstall 6.2, follow the suggestions, and then reinstall and see if that works.

By the way, the second link you provided, installed something called, SurferNETWORK Player to my computer without letting me know. You may want to include that bit of info when posting that link.

I'll try to keep you posted on what happens. I'm getting backed up here, so it may be awhile before I get to this. Right now, it's not critical since I can use Netscape 4x as the default and 6x as the play around with.

    Thanks for your help.

    roverman,

Trust me, nothing on either of the web pages from my Netscape Solutions downloaded the SurferNETWORK Player. You can check the Page Source on those pages.

I am much too aware of Privacy and Security to ever impose a program on any user, unawares.

Let us know if you need additional help with your problem.

    Thanks.
I think it had something to do with my end than anything else. I was trying to find a download date and it showed today, with one of the web pages showing up in the folder, so I jumped to conclusions before I checked it out in more detail.

After looking around, I think it was something I was experimenting with to get away from the lousy music they play over the airwaves here. It was a while back and I forgot I had installed this program.

My apologies for assuming it was one of your links.

I'll let you know if I have more questions on Netscape. You have been a big help. I have learned a lot from this site.

    Thanks.
    Randy

    Randy,

    No apology necessary.

I found three threads on the snews://secnews.netscape.com/netscape.netscape6.windows Newsgroup, which I think might interest you. They are regarding very similar problems to yours in trying to make Netscape 6.2.1 the Default Browser, when there are multiple browsers on the system. If you are using Netscape, these links should (hopefully) take you to the thread:
