i have a bad problem with vmm32.dll, keep getting an error message everytime i start up my comp. only way to avoid this is by starting up in safe mode, or turning off VxDs using "msconfig ". but even when i do that the errors still happens when i try activating some exe's.

but anyway what im looking for is a way to get the .cab file that is needed to rebuild vmm32.dll, i know that for win98 its called base4.cab and is located in C:\win98 folder, but winME just doesnt have that!!!

Where can i find the .cab file needed to rebuild vmm32.dll???
    PLEASE HELP!:(

(also, i do not have a startup disk for ME, it did not come with my comp, it has 3 disks that are used for system and application recovery. i think the base4.cab file:confused: may be in a .paq file on one of my system recovery disks, but how do i get the cab file out?!)

Get an ME startup disk here:

    http://www.nerdlabs.org/bootdisks/diskimages/bootme.exe

    1. Boot up the computer in DOS with CD-Rom support.
    2. Type: "C:\" (if C is your HD)
    3. "EXTRACT C:\Windows\Options\cabs\vmm32.dll C:\Windows\system\vmm32.dll "
    4. Remove the floppy.
    5. Restart.

    If that doesn't work,

    1. Boot up the computer in DOS with CD-Rom support.
    2. Type: "D:\" (if D is your CD ROM--it may be E after booting with the floppy).
    3. "EXTRACT vmm32.dll C:\Windows\System\vmm32.dll "
(You may need to modify this depending on the location of your cab files on the CD. For example, if the cab files are in a folder named Win9x and your CD drive is D, then the first part woud be: extract D:\Win9x\vmm32.dll).
    4. Remove the floppy.
    5. Restart.

If that doesn't work with the CD's you have, you may need to reinstall or borrow a CD.

It is risky because it may not be the same file, but using a Win98 vmm32.dll may allow you to boot.

Thanks for that, but fortunately the problem seems to be with vmm32.dll and not the virtual device driver.

Vmm32.vxd is a drivespace compressed driver file that is compressed so it will load all that much faster. It is also supposed to be machine specific. Drivers installed after setup will be found in separate folders.

I lost vmm32.vxd once on a machine. Knowing no better, I copied it from a totally different machine. Despite all the warnings to the contrary, the machine booted perfectly and automatically installed the other needed drivers. It may have been good luck, but the experience was educational.

    registry problem

(sry, im new to this bbs stuff, am i supposed to write follow ups under new post or thread?)

ok this is the situation now:

i repeatedly receive a blue screen saying "error file: vmm(12)... ",whenever i boot up (after pressing a button as directed the screen will just hang), i have a feeling that the 12 stands for the 12th registry entry in the vmm32 registry key. my problem now is that i can not open my registry!, because every time i try the same blue screen pops up (by the way i have tryed opening the registry when all the startup and static vxd's are turned off, and in safe mode).

as to abraxas i have tryed what u told me to do. unfortunately i am not sure where to find vmm32.vxd. i only have two disks for system recovery and an application recovery disk. for ME am i supposed to use one of these disks??

also i can copy a vmm32 file from another comp running win98, but i dont think this will solve the problem because i feel the error has to do with the registry entry .

p.s. i do know what vmm32 is, i have been to a site that explains all about it. it is a compilation of different .vxds needed to run windows. well if there is a registry entry for a vxd thats not there, woulds deleting the entry solve the problem?

What is the exact error message you are getting?

Does it involve vmm32.dll or vmm32.vxd?

Did you try the extraction procedure I recommended above?

    have tryed

i believe my problem involves vmm32.vxd (rather than the .dll counterpart, my mistake), i will inform you of the detailed error description as soon as i get back home.

i have tryed the procedure you told me, but it says the file is not present.

i have found however a basic vmm32.vxd file which is much smaller in size than the one that is in use right now. it is located in C:\windows\options\cabs\win_20.zip

    actual error

here's what the error says on the actual blue screen:

    "File name:VMM(12)+00004c3c Error: OE: 0028:co283c3c "

    (that big O, i think might be a 0)

but i dont think this problem is usb related, is it?

It wouldn't hurt to unplug them, just to have something quick and easy to narrow out.
I believe you have a corrupt hardware driver that happens to be a vxd file that is corrupt. Other possibility, the video drivers.
A good thing to try is to initiate a System Restore from dos. MS has this page explaining how to do it.

    Bootdisk for ME

    thx mark

thx mark, i have already backed up everything i need and had planned to do a full system restore. unfortunately since this would have been around my 4th time using the system restore disks, the disks are scratched, hence not letting me fully format and restore my comp.

i will try the procedure on the link you gave me, if that doesnt work, i am just going to ask HP to send me some new system restore disks.

    i appreciate your advice, though.

I have a HP >duck< computer too. Ive never reinstall from the restore disks,, mine though would not formate anything why,
becouse the windows system is stored on the hard drive not the install disks, Yours may be differnt, if my pcs hard drive failed id be up the creek without a paddle, they say if the pc is not to old you can ask HP for restore disks that have windows included --but you have to be inventive when asking ,, most likely they will say sorry we dont have them anymore..
so what model do you have ?

You could try asking at there forums---if you havent already

I maybe wrong --but if I were going to use restore disks
I'd have to uninstll IE6 sp1 first and any added hardware.remove and uninstal..

    Good luck

This error is most likely caused by a corrupt registry.

To check the registry, click Start > Run and type scanregw, press ok.

When/If you are asked to save the registry click Yes.

    When done, reboot.

Thank you so much Arie. Running "scanregw" was just what i needed. It resolved the problem quickly and easily! I no longer have that stupid vmm(12) blue screen coming up.

    THANK YOU ARIE!
