Strange situation happening with the cpu. When you load w2000 completely and your desktop shows up. All the programs are in place, the arrow is stopped. It seems the HDD continues burping , tarrrraaa, tarrrraaa, even when nothing is happening. It just started doing this a bit since I added PowerDVD software. . Like it is looping or something. How do you stop this from hiccupping?
    Thanks

Have you got Spybot ? Could be something trying to "call home ". Download and run Spybot and see what it finds.

Look in your startup folder. Some of these programs have their own built in spyware.

Check back and let us know how it did.

    Spybot

    Dear Bill
I used the spybot and it appeared to clear some things up. It also seems to make the comp run a bit faster. Is this possible? However, if I go to update this program, my firewall asks me if I wish to grant access. Using Macafee, and they did not recommend or feel that I should grant access to the internet. Please tell me what you or anyone else thinks about this. Should I or Not grant access. How can I get suggested Updates?

Also, someone recommended a program for privacy called Evidence Eliminator.Should I get into any of this

Thank you all for your input.

What is meant here is only grant access to programs you know about. You know about SpyBot so give it permission!

Now if "Kill your computer trojan/worm.exe" wants access I would decline and go virus/trojan hunting! Smile!

    As for the other problem!

    D/L Startup control panel
    http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

This gives simple and full control of what starts at boot up. After install there will be a Startup icon in control panel. Why this over Msconfig? Msconfig only allows unchecking/disabling of items. Startup Control panel allows deleting items or moving from startup to run as a service etc.

After downloading this look at all the startups and see if there is an entry from Power DVD and if so uncheck it so that it won't run all the time.

Typically these things will load when needed anyway so do not need to be in memory all the time.

If this don't cure it then I suggest you uninstall the DVD program to confirm that it is the problem. There are plenty of these DVD programs.

Yes, your computer will run faster without the spyware.

When you tell it to check for updates, tell the firewall to permit out going and incoming. Also, at times, the program will update the spybot program and your firewall will ask if it is ok to use the new version in place of the old one. Say yes and relax.

    Don't know about Evidence Eliminator. Can't help.

I suggest you use Spybot and Adaware regularly and clean temps. Forget the evidence thing just another slowdowner.

Here is the best evidence eliminator in addition to the above!

    1. Use windows to clean most temps in 1 shot!

    Configure CleanMgr to max settings
    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sageset:1
The above need only be ran once (these settings will be remembered as the default until another sageset is ran).

It will present a menu select all except compress, then

    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sagerun:1
    this does the cleaning

As long as /sageset above has been ran on this computer from now on the /sagerun is the only thing that needs to run.

    2. In Wordpad or notepad paste (only the items below between the lines but not the lines) into a file called cleanup.bat.

make certain that it is named exactly "cleanup.bat "

Save it to root c:\ .
    -----------------------------------------------------
    @echo off
    del c:\*.swp
    del c:\windows\*.swp
    deltree /y c:\windows\shelli*.*
    deltree /y c:\windows\temp\*.*
    deltree /y c:\windows\tempor~1\*.*
    deltree /y c:\windows\history\*.*
    deltree /y c:\windows\spool\printers\*.*
    ------------------------------------------------------

Then to use this boot to DOS by tapping the F8 key while booting and chose "command prompt only "

    Then type cleanup

    hit enter

When it returns to c:\> hit ctrl alt del to reboot

It'll prove a little difficult for W2000 users to "boot to DOS" mflynn - anyway your batch file includes ShellIconCache - why would anyone want to delete that, unless they have an icon display problem? It only give Windows another task rebuilding it. W2000 doesn't store the other stuff under the Windows folder anyway - yours is a solution for W9X.

Thanks for pointing it out. I make a lot of mistakes, I need help too! Smile!

Forgot I was in the 2K forum. It is for win98. I had been there (win98 forum) earlier and forgot!

So donabano forget the boot to dos part. Sorry!

The cleanmgr part is for any OS though!

The shellicon cache is a temp that is automatically recreated. It should be removed ocassionally because it can become curupted and aquire a virus, additionally as fonts are added and removed it can get larger and contain old data.

Win2K using fat32 can be booted to DOS! But because of profiles this batch would still not be valid.

W2k and XP can and do use the windows folder in fact. In 2 cases.

    1. an upgrade from win98 that is using the windows folder and

    2. If the OS is already using the winnt folder and a second OS is installed to the same drive.
