    Mike,
I typed in win386.swp in NAMED.
Then My Computer in LOOK IN.
    Two files appeared.
    1st one looked like this:

    SI TYPE MODIFIED
    WIN386....(drive icon) C:\ 39 SWPFile 3\15\03 7:59 PM

The second one looked like this:

    SI Type MODIFIED
    WIN386....(folder icon) C:\WIND....O....SWPFile 3\15\03 7:55 PM

Did the whole list you gave befor this time and rebooted in SAFE MODE but the mode would not recognize my CDR drives so could not test by trying to install software.
Sooooooo I rebooted to regular and tried to install software and no dice,,,,,,,the message was slightly different this time.
"Setup failed to run installation. Unexpected failure. "

I don't understand the wording in last message on swap file.

So let us move on to the second message I sent download the link I sent.

As I understand you can download just not install, right?

So d/l and install the installer.

Did you execute it after downloading?

    Did it install?

Are you trying the same install program each time?

I found a new Installer Ver 2.0 you just did 1.1 I didn't notice this untill a few minutes ago.

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...255-b702-de3bb768148f&DisplayLang=en#filelist

So get this one run it it will replace the one you just did to a newer one.

Then try to install something different from a different disk. This may not be an installer aproblem at all but a bad disk???

I am off to bed. I will check in with cofffe inthe morning!

    Mike,
I went to the last download site you recommended.
The download was successful and I clicked on OPEN when it was finished downloading.
It prompted me to restart my computer and I did. I tried to install three different softwaredisks upon reboot and got the same unexpected failure message.:(

Are these programs all on the same CD DRIVE? This may be a drive problem.

I am going to send you a link to d/l so you will have something to install from you HD.

I will reread all of this thread to review and see if there is something you can use while doing this test.

    OK Blackstone

If you want to keep going then I will go with you! Just keep in mind also that while doing this you are learning. Learning in a way that will help you later.

We are going to take a different route now!

ATTENTION: the following will look complex and intimidating but print this out and do it 1 step at a time and you can do it.

I will be in and out but I will keep a check on you to help!

And it will not take as long as it looks either. Should be able to do all steps in slightly over an hour including downloads.

When you get to the install part if you get the installer error then move on to the next step. So if some do complete then they may clear the way for the others

We are going to give your computer a virtual ExLax! Smile!

We are going to do a deep clean!

This is a shotgun approach and even if it does not fix the problem is benificial to your computer so no time wasted. Additionally it clears the slate for easier trouble shooting and diags.

Do these steps in the order given, print this if needed!

Get these downloads, install and download updates but do not run them (that will be done in safe mode). So get them all downloaded.

After they are downloaded install all but do not run. The SpyBot and Adaware only, need to be updated online so do the updates for these 2.

    _____________________________________
    Spy and Adware

    SpyBot http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download
Run this twice delete all it finds, "ALWAYS" run this before AdAware.
Leave all it wants to leave after the second run.

    AdAware 6.0 http://www.lavasoft.de
    Run only after SpyBot!
Make sure to configure to Max settings, all files and compressed files. Delete all it finds

    BHO Demon http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm
A BHO is like a autostart/startup that only runs when you run the Browser.
This program runs stand alone no install is required post me the items it finds other than the below. Normal entries here would be Acro….. (Acrobat Reader) or Nav…. (Norton Anti virus).
    _____________________________________

    Clean Registry

    RegCleaner http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/regcleaner.shtml
Look in first 2 cols for programs you thought you uninstalled or removed, these are the dregs left by the uninstaller. Also tag and remove any that you are POSITIVE are not supposed to be on your computer. After removing these go to the top Tools-Registry Cleanup-Do them all. Delete all it finds.

    EasyClean1.7 http://gswi.com/downloads.htm
Run only unnecessary files and registry clean delete all it finds.

    Fix the windows Socket

    W98 & ME WinSock fix http://www.bu.edu/pcsc/internetaccess/winsock2fix.html

    Virus Delta Force
    Special Virus cleaners

    Stinger http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
    PQremove http://www.webmasterfree.com/software/2911.html
    Trend SysClean http://www.trendmicro.com/download/tsc.asp

These are the Delta force for only the newest and most prolific viruses today.
Use these if it is possible that a virus may have disabled your regular scanner.
For a quick clean, and then if they find and clean anything do a full deep scan with a full-fledged scanner.
If you suspect a virus has disabled your regular scanner you should do 3 things

Download STINGER and PQREMOVE and run them. NOTE: always download them do not run an older one that you have had; these 2 are updated almost daily.

The Trend SysClean is a finder only will not clean but the others do clean. So if SysClean finds something post it back and we will download a fix.

After all above are installed and updated then reboot hit F8 chose safe mode.

Then run them 1 at a time in the same order given above.

    Then reboot to full mode.

If you had Viri then tell me about them first before the next step, if not proceed to next step.

Now try to install any of the ones that failed to install the first time.

After retrying to get all the steps done then get back to me.

    mflynn Hi
    You know better than I
windows installer and installsheild are two different animals
for more info do a search (google) installshield--I'm thinking if he
first gets past the virus scans--to, with your guidance
rename everything in the [common files] -installshield folder
just renaming the folders inside should do--then try installing something that requires installshield, from a CD, this should reinstall installshield ?

    Good luck--everyone

You know Lonnie I didn't think of that!

    Great idea!

Actually you can safely delete the engine folder, been a long time since I had this one.

    So BlackStone do this

    My Computer browse to c:\Program Files\Common Files\Installshield.

Inside of this there is a folder called Engine. Rename this folder to "Old engine ".

Now try the install if it works now then come back and remove the Old Engine Folder!

This is probably it, thanks Lonnie!

I think Lonnies suggestion will do the trick.

If it does then you do not need to do the last cleanup proceedure I gave.

But since you have gone this far and since you did have not 1 but several "Damaging Viri" on this computer in the past I would take the time to do it all.

Keep in mind you are learning, and these thing could help you later, and these cleans will definately help with stability and performance.

If you do decide to do the cleans then do Lonnies process first because if it fixes the problem it then you will not have a problem installing the cleanups.

BTW Do not install any GAME untill the cleanups are done if you are going to do them. To test you can begin the install then cancel.

Yes, either rename or delete the folder containing ikernel.exe - I mentioned that before ;)

    More information:
This is from the InstallShield troubleshooting page:
    http://support.installshield.com/kb/view.asp?pcode=ALL&articleid=Q105408
INFO: Troubleshooting General Installation Errors End User Version
    =========copy/paste=========
    # potential cause is a missing Stdole.tlb, stdole32.tlb, or stdole2.tlb file. These are core Windows files and should exist on your machine in the System or System32 directory. Make sure that if you get these file from another machine, the machine is running the same operation system as the machine you are trying to run the setup on. For further information about these Microsoft Windows files, contact Microsoft or search their DLL Help Database.

    # If you are trying to install to a Windows 98 machine, download and run Dcom98.exe (snip)

    # Make sure that you are using the latest version of the InstallShield engine. To install the latest engine see article Q105097
    ============end c/p===========
    This is from
    http://support.installshield.com/kb/view.asp?articleid=Q105097
INFO: Install the Latest Version of Ikernel.exe
    ===========copy/paste==========

    1. First go to your <Common Files>\InstallShield\engine\6\Intel 32 directory and delete the Intel 32 directory that contains the old ikernel.exe file. It is typically located under the C:\Program Files directory.

    2. Download the ikernel engine update (single executable) http://support.installshield.com/kb/files/Q105097/SingleExe/ikernelupdate.exe

and run ikernel update installer. This single executable can be saved to a disk to be installed on other systems without Internet access. It updates the ikernel engine on your system, and all future ISPro 6.x installer will now use this updated engine.

    ============end c/p==========

    To summarize:
First make sure you have the three files mentioned: Stdole.tlb stdole32.tlb and stdole2.tlb

I did a find on these files myself, and I have all three of them in C:\Windows\System.

If you have these three files, then next step would be to download and install DCOM98. The link I gave you before doesn't work because it ended in a period  so try this one:
    http://www.microsoft.com/com/dcom/dcom98/download.asp

Afterwards, empty out C:\Windows\Temp and disable your antivirus, and try the install again.

If you didn't do so already and you are trying a previously failed install, you need to open C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\engine\6\ Inside the "6" folder you will see an Intel32 folder. DELETE the Intel32 folder and all it's contents (copy to a backup loation first as a precaution, as I mentioned before)

If that doesn't help you should get the ikernelupdate.exe from the link given to install the latest InstallShield engine.

Well,,,,,,,,,,,Lonny's information and Mikes instruction on exactly how to do it, was the perfect combination.
I renamed the engine to old engine and now everything I want to install installs.
    I then deleted old engine.

That WAS the answer. Thank you for bearing with me and keeping at it till there was success. You guys are the absolute best.
After about 6 months of limbo I can now install new software, thanks to you.
I am going to download all of your recommended downloads Mike because I recognize a big need to experience their processes and as you say this is a learning experience. I figure the more I fool around with things the more I will learn and maybe someday be able to contribute to a thread like you, Lonny, Alice and Daizy.
I will download all the recommended links and then reboot in SAFE MODE and run them 1 at a time and report the results in my next post.

Good to hear your problem is solved, Aryan, and that the fx was as simple as renaming a folder :)
