    Hi Charles,
Thanks for the link, but have been there too! I think I have been to every Windows help site there is and none of them have covered this one.I also have many books and magazines and none of them seem to be applicable to this.As Davott said,I have borrowed from the library and zilch!
Some one some where must have the answer but where?
    regards:confused:

I am getting absolutely sick and tired of this unbelievably slow shutdown problem. My last shutdown, with all of the recent gimmicks we've discussed, took FOUR MINUTES!!!

    This is OUTRAGEOUS!!!

From now on, I'm not going to bother shutting down Windows. Just going to disconnect the power, and the hell with it!

Hello again Tric how are things down under, computer problems not with standing.

    Hi Davott

I will give this a shot if you both are up to it.

Tric you know me I clean it before I work on it, you know kind of like a surgeon! Smile!

I believe the problem is related to shutting down or trying to shut down something network related like DNS.

So lets get thru the cleans and then we will tackle that!

First get these programs but do not run that will be done in safe mode.

    Spyware and adware removal

    SpyBot http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download

Run this twice delete all it finds, "ALWAYS" run this before AdAware.

Leave all it wants to leave after the second run.
    _________________________________
    AdAware 6.0 http://www.lavasoft.com

    Run only after SpyBot!

Make sure to configure to Max settings, all files and compressed files.Delete all it finds

A BHO is like a autostart/startup that only runs when you run the Browser.

This program runs stand alone no install is required post me the items it finds other than the below. Normal entries here would be Acro….. (Acrobat Reader) or Nav…. (Norton Anti virus).

    Registry and System cleaners

    RegCleaner http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/regcleaner.shtml

Look in first 2 cols for programs you thought you uninstalled or removed, these are the dregs left by the uninstaller. Also tag and remove any that you are POSITIVE are not supposed to be on your computer. After removing these go to the top Tools-Registry Cleanup-Do them all. Delete all it finds.

    EasyClean1.7 http://gswi.com/downloads.htm

Run only unnecessary files and registry clean delete all it finds. If you have ME or XP in the "Unnessesary Files" type the word HELP in the skip box. Do not do Duplicate files!

    RegScrubXP http://home.carolina.rr.com/lexunfreeware/RegScrubXP/RegScrubXP.htm

    NOTE: W2K and XP only

Select RegScrub finds problems and remove all it finds.

Select everything except these 4 items.
    1. Don’t show balloon tips
    2. Enable fast shutdown
    3. Increase MaxConnectionsPerServer to 10
    4. Disable Task Scheduler service
After the first reboot after you run XPAntiSpy go back to XpAntiSpy and uncheck the clear Pagefile at shutdown, as we only want to clear it once

Note XPAntiSpy before booting to safe mode!

    Now boot to safe mode

    1st do this:

    Configure CleanMgr to max settings
    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sageset:1
The above need only be ran once (these settings will be remembered as the default until another sageset is ran).

It will present a menu select all except compress, then

    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sagerun:1
As long as /sageset above has been ran on this computer from now on the /sagerun is the only thing that needs to run.

Browse to the winnt\prefetch and delete all files.

Then begin at the top of this list and do the cleans one at a time.

When finished reboot and in XPAntiSpy reinstate the pagefile.

Then get back with the results. No time wasted because these will definately help performance anyway.

    Mike

PS Looks like a lot but not to bad and worth it!

    Hi Tric

Yeah I remember, figured you had most of these but Davott may not.

I also surely understand busy!!!! MEEEE tOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Remember this is just the clean before looking into a couple more specific areas.

But the cleaning could by chance hit something.

I truly appreciate all the trouble you obviously have gone to, but I really am whipped. I cannot and will not spend another minute trying to solve this ridiculous shutdown problem. As I said in a previous message, I am now skipping the shutdown/turn off procedure entirely. Henceforth, when I finish a session, I'm simply yanking the plug. disconnecting the power, and walking away immediately. I've done this now for the last two days with no ill effects whatsoever, and heartily recommend it to everyone afflicted with this problem.

    Hi Mike,
I've done the whole clean up but the darn thing still sits there saying "windows is shutting down "
Well I guess you have something in mind,I am not giving up on this,a machine is not going to beat me.As you might guess I am stubborn, surely there is an answer to this dratted problem.
I am also not sure that just unplugging and walking away is a good move for my computer as I have put a lot of time and money into it.
Over to you and anyone else that may have the answer.
Nothing shows in BOH except yahoo companion and Adobe!
    Thanks again:)

    Ok Tric

Do you use the Yahoo companion?

For testing use BHODemon and disable it for a couple of days, just to see!

Now to try and see some of what is happening at shutdown do this.

    Go Start-run
    type

    ipconfig /flushdns

    Then

Go to Administrative tools-Event viewer. Rt click each event block and clear them.

After they are all cleared do nothing else except close the screens and shutdown.

Then boot back up and immediately go back to the event viewer. We now clean logs and entries that show only what happend when we shut down and restarted. Save the logs and post back the entries so we can see them.

Now download Startup control panel use it to disable everything virus scanners, firewalls and see if it shutsdown now, if so put back 1 at a time.

    Startup control
    http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

This gives simple and full control of what starts at boot up. After install there will be a Startup icon in control panel. Why this over Msconfig? Msconfig only allows unchecking/disabling of items. Startup Control panel allows deleting items or moving from startup to run as a service etc.

Do the above first then download XpAntiSpy:

    http://www.webattack.com/get/xpantispy.shtml

Select mostly everything except these 4 items.

    1. Don’t show balloon tips
    2. Enable fast shutdown
    3. Increase MaxConnectionsPerServer to 10
    4. Disable Task Scheduler service

You should be able to read the entries and select what you want for privacy and performance.

But there is one special entry here "fast shutdown ", try it!

After the first reboot after you run XPAntiSpy go back to XpAntiSpy and uncheck the clear Pagefile at shutdown, as we only want to clear it once.

I will be traveling on Business today and tommorow but will try to check in from a clients office.

If none of the above works then readup on the Services and try to trim yours.

    Here:

    http://www.aumha.org/regfiles.htm http://win2000tips.home.att.net/Tipstricks.htm#Pagefile

All I can say is no real waste of time here even if it don't fix the problem, because these will improve performance and stability.

    Good luck,
    Mike

If you are using an Nvidia Gfx Card and you update the driver from the Nvidia site, then this causes shutdown delays. The time it takes is variable but seems an age if you are used to a quick shutdown.

    This is what you do:

Click on Start/Run and type services.msc then click OK

Scroll through list until you find NVIDIA Driver Helper Service, double-click this.

Press the Stop Button in Service Status, and then, from the Startup Type drop-down menu, select Manual. Now click OK and close the Services Window.

Might be a good idea to restart PC, to save the changes proper....now try it.

Hope this helps you.... if of course you have Nvidia Gfx card & Drivers.

If it isn't this, i'll see what else i can do for you, let me know.

    Hi Logica,
Many thanks but I don't have NVidia so that doesn't apply to me.
Any other ideas would be appreciated though!

When did this slowdown happen? What was the last thing you installed/did at that time?

Does it shutdown quickly from Safe Mode?

Does your PC take an age to startup as well?

What programs sit in your Tray (those that you have added)?

Do you have System Restore on (it is on by default at installation)?

I have been having the same problem with my laptop. I used the suggestion about the registry hack but it didn't really speed things up. Since my desktop doesn't have this problem I figured it had to be something unique to my laptop.

I also only had 400megs of space left on my laptop hard drive. I decided to clean up space using the control panel performance options. The first go round i just cleaned up temp files etc and there was no change in shutdown.

On the second time I selected disk clean up advanced and chose to delete all restore points except for the most current. This gave me back 1.4 gigs of space!!

The added benefit was my XP shutdown went from 3 minutes to 20 seconds! So I supspect that there was either a corruption with my restore points or there wasn't enough disk space for windows to quikly close. I don;t know what windows was doing during that 3 minutes but it is now no longer a problem.

So, you might want to try this.

    Hi Tric

    Do this

Reboot go into CMOS/BIOS and find power management, make sure it is on. Look at the settings for anything to do with power off.

    Then back in windows

goto control panel / power options / apm

then click enable advance power management support

May not work when you shut down this time but next time let us hope!

    Let me know.

BTW not only should your be shutting down faster, with all these cleanups and tweaks it should be faster!

I knew System Restore was a problem for a lot of people and that is one thing that was a problem for you Tric.

I need to know what you have in your Tray at startup and maybe that that loads but doesn't show in the tray. From this, i might know if you are running something that is causing the problem.
