I tried to install a new HD and format and then load XPSP1 slipstream disc so that I would have a new system. The new HD went in as my only drive and I put in the slipstream disc. When it gets to a certain point it says that my HD isn't formatted correctly.

I then put my old drive in and used my new one as the slave and formatted in nfts "which is what I want ". It still does the same thing when I try it over again.

I made the slipstream like the site said, I even made a second one (later) to be sure. I even made a set of floppy discs and the same thing keeps happening.

I currently have the system up w/my old 30G HD as my master and my new 80G as my slave. On my 30G I have 2 partitions (C and D). They are both listed as "local drives ". My new drive is listed under "my computer" as "NEW VOLUME F" not local disc like the other two.

I tried to copy and paste my girlfriends entire folder to F from D to see if it would work and now it's very difficult to open any of her stuff. But I did get it to copy

Sorry for the length of post and I do need some help. Thanks:D

I also lost my bios settings and I'm still not sure if they are right.

I also right clicked my F drive and formatted it that way.

I also went through my "my computer ", manage, disk management, format.

Could'nt figure out "fdisk" or get it to do what it says to do?

Under "my computer ", manage disk, management,. It list my drives like this: C: Healthy (system)
    D: Healthy (Boot)
    F: Healthy (active)

The new disk seems to be the problem, eh? How far exactly do you get in setup with only the new drive in the machine? Does it reach the format part?

    How are the jumpers set?

Set the BIOS to "default" or "setup" if you have those options. Be sure S.M.A.R.T. is enabled.

I can get as far as the last boot up disk or close to the end of the slipstream CD. It says that my disk isn't formatted with a windows compatible partition. When I get to the format part it tells me to go back and partition my disk and when I try it says it can't.

I've had the jumpers set as Master when it's by itself and without a jumper like the manufacturer said. neither worked.

Does it matter what size the HD is? Meaning my system isn't that old but maybe I don't have something set up right.

Where would I verify my ability to set BIOS to "default" or "setup ".

    Yes, S.M.A.R.T. is enabled.

    Did I format wrong?

Usually somewhere in the instructions for the key functions in the BIOS, there is something about "Set defaults and exit" or something similar.

Did that HD ever have anything else on it? Just in case the partitions are messed up somehow, download this:
    http://www.coxpc.com/delpart.zip

Put delpart.exe on a Win98/ME startup floppy (you can get one here: http://utils.skull-tech.com/bootdisks/bootme.exe )and boot your machine off the floppy with just the new HD in it. Run delpart to remove all partitions you can find.

Then boot from the XP CD with no partitions on the drive. XP will take care of that when you get to that point.

One last thing---if you don't have the 80-wire, 40-connector cable on your drive, be sure that PIO and not UDMA is set in the BIOS.

There was a place to load defaults and exit. When I do that It disables my S.M.A.R.T. but I change it back . Does it matter?

The HD was brand new and states it is an 80G but never listed more than either 74G or 76G.

    I only want one partition.

Does it matter if my XP cd is only an upgrade disk?

I will create the things you ask and then check back before I do the switch out to see if I need to do more.

It doesn't matter if you change the SMART back. The rest will remain defaults.

If I found the right manual, there is a "Standard CMOS Setup" section where the drives should be set to Auto. That is probably the default anyway.

Was there also an F6 for loading basic defaults for troubleshooting?

It's normal for the drive to be smaller than it was rated by the manufacturer. They count to their advantage. A meg to them is 1,000,000 bytes, while a meg is really 1024x1024=1048576 bytes. By making it smaller, their drives look bigger to the customer.

The upgrade has the whole OS. You will (hopefully) be asked to insert a 98 or ME disk to prove you are eligible for an upgrade, that's all.

there was a setting for basic but I don't recall A troubleshooting part. Yes I also had or have it set up for auto detect.

My floppy has 2 Items on it 1)bootme 2) delpart (not unzipped)
    is that ok?

Sorry I don't understand? Do you mean for me to click on your links and open to my A drive? or click on your links and save to my A? I don't mean to be stupid but these steps may be the problem to my problems.

Now I have first part done and there are a bunch of files. I'm ready to load the delpart to my floppy.

Well, see if getting whatever is on that disk off from it will help. That delpart.exe is from an old NT 3.51 CD and works pretty well at getting rid of damaged or stubborn partitions.

You need to put a formatted floppy in the drive and then run bootme.exe to make a boot floppy. You don't put the actual bootme file on the floppy. Then add delpart to it afterward, unzipped, so that delpart.exe is on the floppy.

    Good luck.

well, here we go, I think I have it done right. I will also replace my 80-conductor with the one that I'm currently using. They look the same but will do it anyway.

sorry to post with bad news When I put the floppy in it starts and asks if I want to do one of 4 things

    1)
    2)cd-rom support
    3)no cd-rom support
    4)

then when I run delpart it says that there is no harddisk and starts flashing at me and wont do ****.

I don't know what to say, it really shouldn't be this hard, right!

    Try choosing 2.

Maybe the HD is bad. It should work fine by itself.
