I hope this is in the right forum, correct me if it's not & I will move it.

Can someone help me get rid of these Verita's update messanger ads ?

I restored my PC about a month ago & ever since,I have been getting a small screen that pop ups about 4-5 times a night ,asking me if I want to update my Veritas update. All of these pop-ups appear to be something from Microsoft(I guess).
I have never heard of such. f I right click on it,I only have the option of moving the pop up.
I can only close it out or click on it to update this(whatever it is).

I have also been getting a couple of pop-up screens from my Windows messanger. They are trying to sell a product to help grow the male genatalia 1 "-3 ".
This type of advertising just erks me,since I never look at any type of porno or anything in that nature.Kids may be using my PC sometimes & this is just not me.
I don't ever remember getting these types of advertisments when I first got my PC in January 2003.

I am running Windows XP,cable modem thru Charter Communications.

Please,if anyone can give me some help,it will be greatly appreciated. You all have really given me all the help on my PC in the past week & I thank you for it.

try this to disable M$ Mess:
    http://www.windows-help.net/WindowsXP/tune-05.html

then go to Administrative tools/comp management/services and apps/services, scroll down until you see "messenger" and disable it.

It is confusing because there are 2 kinds of Messenger. One is for IM, and the other allows communication on a network- this is your system admin, shut down in 5 minutes for maint for example. The latter is the one that pops up out of the blue on your desktop with paid ads (the nerve of M$!), but it's easy to kill in XP. Good luck, let us know if it works for you.

    Johanna,
I tried these steps that were posted on the first link that you provided & it would not work.

Everytime I pressed (OK),after I had typed in the command,a screen would pop-up & say that it did not have a file under that command & to reread the command & try again.

OK,I think that I have done this right.

    I went to Start/Control panel/Performance & Maintenance/Administrative Tools/& then clicked on Computer management.
After doing some messing around in there,I finally got a screen to pop up & I scrolled down till I saw (Messanger).I then left clicked on it & it "highlighted ",I then went up to the top left of this screen & clicked on "stop this program ".

Did I do this right or not.I am not to good at reading & understanding abbreviations, but this is all that I could make of it.I have not learned the PC language yet,but I am trying to learn.

I went to the first site that you gave me & tried to follow some steps that were on that site to "uninstall" the Windows messanger, but Windows kept saying that it did not know this or whatever, anyway,I believe that your instructions worked.
I shut my PC down for a few minutes & turned it back on & didn't have the messanger pop-up again.

I thank you for your knowledge. This board really works & I have mentioned it to quite a few people.
    Thanks again.
    ;)

OK go back to Services and set Messenger to either Manual or Disabled. If it has started stop it again.

Double click Messenger and it will open. That is where you can disable it. Mine is set to Manual.

    Update message...

Veritas makes backup software. There is a backup program included in Windows XP that is made by Veritas. It is trying to update itself. If you update the program the message should stop. HTH

maggie - the only problem with having a service you don't want running set to manual start is that it can be started by another app as well as by a user.

Disabled and it will only be started if a human operator changes it to another option.

Your right! If I ever have those problems I'm going to disable it. I guess my three PC network really doesn't need messaging. LOL Easier to holler across the house or room. :)

Does this mean I should click on & update the VERITAS messanger screen or does this mean to update my "automatic" Windows updater ???

I am new at this & don't quite understand what you mean.

Thanks for the replies,I just need a little more help.

That message sounds reasonable. I'd go to Veritas and check for an update. There should be a link in your program.

    Maggie,
Thanks for such a fast reply.I will do so.

I am just one of those that is a little scared to click on something, because of all of the problems that I have had in the past.
I have had things to install by themselves by just clicking on a webpage & almost couldn't get it off.I couldn't find where it had installed itself.

I will try this & report back with my results.

OK,I did these steps again & after I "left" clicked on the "messanger ",I then right clicked & went to the top left of that page & clicked to "stop this program" & then another small screen popped up & ask if "I wanted to stop this program? ",I clicked (yes).

This was last night & if I remember correctly, this is how I did this.Whatever,I have not had any more VERITA pop-ups.

Thanks to you Johanna & Rod from another thread for these steps,I believe they worked this time.

Is it possible that DragRacerXXX is having trouble because he keeps misspelling "messenger "?
