I am running 98 SE and was messing with my burning software (Nero) when it started locking up. After restarting a couple of times I found when I tried to go to "My Computer" it not only locked up but nothing was displayed. I had just gone to "My Computer" before the Nero problems and everything was normal.

Any idea's how to get "My Computer" to function properly and display "Control Panel, etc.?

    Hi,
If it was My PC or one i was trying to fix, id remove Nero and then see if that fixes it, then try reinsatlling it..
Or even try and un-do the changes that you made and see if that fixes it. But its up to you..:)

If this just happened in the last day or two boot to a Dos prompt and type the following and then press enter.

    scanreg /restore

Choose a cabfile in the list that predates the problem (if there is one). Cross your fingers and reboot. :)

If you don't know how to boot to a dos prompt, while the computers booting tap the ctrl key continuously until it stops at a menu. In the menu, choose dos prompt only. If the ctrl key doesn't get you there try F8.

After I read your post a second time I noticed the computer also locked up. This being the case I don't know if this will help or not. It can't hurt to try however.

Thanks guys. I wasn't even able to get to Add/Remove to remove Nero so I tried Scan drive and Defrag and I guess it worked. It seems to be normal now, but I will go ahead and reinstall Nero to be on safe side.
