    Hello,

For some reason my computer has been freezing a lot lately. I would be online doing something and and then nothing, all locked up. Lately, if I have a couple of pages opened just one may lock up, and the others may be fine. Except, after I use Ctrl+Alt+ Delete, not just the locked page but everything will close.

I am also getting a blue screen a lot (not sure if they are related) that says ' Windows....A fatal exception OD has occured at 0002:016F391C. The urrent application will be terminated.'

I use windows '98. I ran a virus check and also ran Ad Aware. The problems persist though.

Thank You in advance for any help given.

Very general non specfic at this point!

So clean up! Here are the steps to do a deep clean!

Not as complex as they look, just do them 1 step at a time in the order given.
    -----------------------------------------------
    Configure CleanMgr to max settings
    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sageset:1
The above need only be ran once (these settings will be remembered as the default until another sageset is ran).

It will present a menu select all except compress, then

    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sagerun:1
As long as /sageset above has been ran on this computer from now on the /sagerun is the only thing that needs to run.
    -----------------------------------------------
    Cleanups
These are for 95 98 ME only!

Boot to DOS (not shutdown to DOS). While booting hit F8 to startup menu. Chose "command prompt only ".

Type these commands exactly hit enter at the end (do not type the notes that are in parenthesis like this).

del c:\*.swp (may get file not found, is ok)
    del c:\windows\*.swp
    deltree c:\windows\shelli*.*
deltree c:\windows\temp\*.* (answer yes to all) "ALL "
    deltree c:\windows\tempor~1\*.*
    deltree c:\windows\history\*.*
deltree c:\windows\spool\printers\*.*Remove floppy hit CTRL ALT DEL to reboot the computer. After booting back to Windows then a scan & defrag.
    -----------------------------------------------
    Spyware and adware removal

SpyBot is some better than Adaware but use both because they sometimes find differnt things.

    SpyBot1.1 rev 4 http://www.lurkhere.com/~nicefiles/

Run this twice delete all it finds, "ALWAYS" run this before AdAware.

Leave all it wants to leave after the second run.
    -----------------------------------------------

    AdAware 6.0 http://www.lavasoft.de

This is in case you are still running the old Adaware

    Run only after SpyBot!

Make sure to configure to Max settings, all files and compressed files. Delete all it finds.

More than likely this will get it, if not we have a clean slate to triuble shoot farther.

    Let us know!

    Mike

Thank you for your reply, but to be honest with you your reply left me in a daze:eek: . I haven't a clue about computers and how to fix stuff. I'm just trying here to see what help I can give myself. I would hate to make anything worse if I don't do something correct. Man, I feel overwhelmed:rolleyes: .

    Thanks

I understand. We never know how comfortable you are with the OS.

But if you print this and follow it exactly it will help.

Or get someone that has more experience to help you do this.

There is no simple answer appearent here, and I don't have a magic wand and computers don't heal themselves. Smile.

    Mike

PS These are just cleanup, may not fix the problem but a very good chance that they will. If they don't it will clean the slate for further diags.

This will also help you computer to faster also!

Okay, well I tried doing the first thing mentioned and all I get is an error message that says ' Cannot fine file cleanmgr/sagest:1 (or it's components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.'

This is all I keep getting.:(

Space after the cleanmgr and you spelled it "/sagest:1" ???

    cleanmgr /sageset:1

    :D Hi There,
We had the same problem (BIG TIME) with our computer freezing up.....When it froze we lost mouse and keyboard, therefore a safe way to shutdown or restart...
We finally took it to a computer person and it was DISPLAY DRIVERS went bad....Once he put new Display Drivers in we have had no trouble for about two weeks now.
We are BEGINNERS, but thought I would pass on our experience with this to you....very scarry....thought we had lost our computer. GOOD LUCK TO YOU :D

We also had problem with computer freezing all the time while computer was still under warranty. Apparently it was caused by duplicate device drivers. You can see if you have duplicates only by going into Safe Mode and right clicking under My Computer, Properties, Device Manager Tab and then double click on the devices to see what's listed. If you see identical drivers, then the duplicates have to be removed to stop the freezing. But suggest you get more help before deleting as there may be some you shouldn't delete.

*** DISPLAY DRIVERS went bad....Once he put new Display Drivers in we have had no trouble for about two weeks now.

I had much the same problem when I tried to use the supposedly latest and greatest universal video drivers.

Machine would freeze up on programs that it NEVER did before. Machine would not shut down when set to High Color 16bit.

Mouse was very fussy at times.

Went back to the original drivers that came with the GeFroce4 card and no problems for at least a month.

This is a quote from the link I posted:

    =============copy/paste==========
Freezing when surfing or on shutdown

This problem is often caused by out of date video drivers. (snip) a good way to test and stabilise your system is to reduce hardware acceleration on your video card by going to Control Panel, Display, Settings, Advanced, Performance
-or- Control Panel, Display, Settings, Advanced, Troubleshooting. If your system improves as hardware acceleration is reduced, we can assume that video drivers are your problem.
    ============end copy/paste========

On my Win95B system, the setting can also be found by Right-clicking My Computer and selecting Properties ( or going to Start Settings Control Panel System) and clicking the Performance tab. Under Advanced Settings, click the Graphics button and move the slider to the left to reduce hardware acceleration.

Well, I do think that Alice hit the nail on the head. I reduced hardware acceleration as she suggested and it hasn't froze since. The next question is though, can I get the drivers online for a free download? Can I install it/them myself?

    Thanks a bunch.

    Hi,

I am new to the board and i am currently having the same problems with my PC, and I knew it had to be the graphics drivers because i think i have installed them incorrectly.

The replies that i have read have gave me some ideas to try and also some handy tips to irradicate this problem or keep it under control at least.

    Thanks

    Paul
