    Hi Davie,
Don't know if this will help but check Microsoft Knowledge Base Article Q178084.
I had a similar problem with Windows 98SE and I had to reinstall the Windows files by doing a "Custom Recovery" from my IBM Product Recovery CD which cleared up the error.
    Good luck.

    Hi Davie,
I don't know what kind of set up you have on your computer but when I got this error it was on an IBM Aptiva computer running Windows 98SE.
With this computer I got a Product Recovery CD with all the software that was preloaded at thefactory, including the operating system.
What I did was insert the Recovery CD and then reboot.
During the boot up you have to select "Complete Recovery" or "Custom Recovery ".
I selected "Custom Recovery" and then typed in:
    C:\WINDOWS\*.*
This replaced the windows files without losing data.
The only problem I had was I had to reinstall my printer & scanner software.
You might want to check with your computer supplier to see if you can do this before replacing your hard drive.
    Good luck
