    Hi everyone,

Some time ago i found that when i move the slider in the Volume Control i don't hear the familiar Ding sound that tells me the sound level anymore... :(

I think the problem has been caused by the deletion (probably by some installation) of some registry key...minor nuisance surely but very annoying to me!

    any help? TIA

    P.S. Win98SE OS

In the sound applet in the control panel check to see what sound it's set to use for "default sound ". If it's set to none, change it to "ding.wav ".

I've got the same problem. I think it happened when I installed AVG 6.0 antivirus (freeware edition). When I installed it it seemed to mess around with some of the sounds that played when opening and closing applications. Also didn't get the default sound when I mouse clicked when a mouse click wasn't allowed. Didn't notice the sound was gone on the volume control until I read your post. I unistalled AVG a week ago but the volume control sound hasn't come back. So my guess is that on my computer, at least AVG somehow has disabled this feature.

Guess we will have to play around with this to see where it has gone!

Well, perhaps the registry key for it is missing. I had this happen a while back and that's what was wrong with mine. Check to see if you have the following registry key or not.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\.Default\.Default

Is it there? If not, create it and then check the sound applet in the control panel and see if it's there. If not you may have to reboot the computer. If I remember correctly though, you shouldn't have to. Notice; there are three .Default keys in the path. You need to have the third one.

i checked the registry and there is this key only:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default

seems two .Default keys are missing...

In the meantime i found this solution on Groups.Google:

i tried it but nothing changed...still unable to see the Default Sound which should be listed in control panel>sounds>events window...(btw my ding.wav file is intact and it works).

So i restored the registry (Scanreg/restore) and now the matter stands as before... :(

    i'm going mad...think i'll give up! :D

P.S. my OS language is NOT english...

Gianni: I made the registry merge with the registry solution you found on Google and it fixed my volume control. I now have the sound back when I change the slider and when I mouse click when a mouse click is not allowed. Thanks, good catch.:D

Now we need to see if we can get your computer fixed!!

When I created the *.reg file using Notepad I copied the text from your post exactly as it was posted with the second line of the second and third keys wrapped.

I first tried with no line wrapping but did not work.

I will post the file I created on my web page so you can download it and try if you want. Go here: Registry File Note: I edited the file to use a different *.wav file for a different sound. You may have to edit and change to what will suit your setup.

Let us know how you make out, good or bad.

    Eureka!

hi JohnB, i got your reg file but unfortunately it didn't work for me for some unknown reason...my OS different language (italian) maybe...

Then 1 hour ago as a last trial i opened Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Windows Setup tab , unchecked the entire Multimedia - uninstalled it - reboot - installed it again - reboot - and...

BINGO! my Default Sound (=Suono predefinito in Italian...) Event is back again and so is my "loved" Ding sound in Volume Control!!!

It now works properly and i'm playing it all day long! :D :D :D

My .DEFAULT REG file looks now like this:

    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\.Default]

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\.Default\Musica0]
    @= "C:\\WINDOWS\\media\\Musica predefinito.wav "

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\.Default\Jungle0]
    @= "C:\\WINDOWS\\media\\Jungle predefinito.wav "

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\.Default\Robotz0]
    @= "C:\\WINDOWS\\media\\Robotz predefinito.wav "

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\.Default\Utopia0]
    @= "C:\\WINDOWS\\media\\Utopia predefinito.wav "

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\.Default\.current]
    @= "C:\\WINDOWS\\media\\Ding.wav "

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\.Default\Combin0]
    @= "C:\\WINDOWS\\media\\Ding.wav "

Of course i immediately exported and saved it and surely i'll keep it handy in case this happens again... (btw every fellow member should save this thread for future reference imho cos the problem is not uncommon in Win98 users as i learnt browsing Groups.Google and may come in useful sooner or later...)

And thank everyone for your help in trying to get this minor problem fixed!

    Cheers! :)

Great news that you got it fixed. Yes, the OS language difference could make a difference. It also tried unistalling and reinstalling the Multimedia (only part, I think) and it did not help.

My .Default reg also looks very similar to yours now.

    Have a nice day, John.:)
