When I run my cursor over anything on the start menu, I get a little text box pop up who's sole purpose is to irritate me. I want to know how to turn them off.

Yesterday, I installed XP on another partition and while setting it up for my prefs, I turned the little text boxes off. I went to send an EMail to my Cousin to tell him how to do it and for the life of me I can't find how I did it. I mean it had been less than five minutes since I did it. Isn't that just special?

Do you mean balloon tips or the start menu itself? The Start Menu is customizable from "properties" by right clicking on the taskbar. I use a VBScript for disabling Balloon Tips that I'd be happy to email to anyone who asks me offlist. Johanna@nktelco.net I cannot remember where I got it.

    You can go to:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

and create a reg dword, EnableBalloonTips and set the value to 0.

Or, copy the text between the lines to Notepad and Save As balloon.reg

Then right-click the file and Merge to put this entry into the registry.
    --------------------------------------------------------
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
    "EnableBalloonTips "=dword:00000000

    Thanks Johanna and Abraxas

I had the dword already there. Also found the balloon tips in the gpedit.msc but has no effect. I even changed them (gpedit and registry) and changed them back. No help.

Johanna, I do mean on the start menu>all programs list. I'll ask in an email.
