I bought last year a copy of Norton Systemworks Pro 2002 and it has worked great under both 98 and 2k which I dual boot. This year I have bought it again because on Pricewatch you can again find the cd for 8 to 12 dollars.

But I have been told that when my virus updates run out in June (and Norton asks for big $ to extend) that I will have to uninstall NAV and then re-install it from the 2003 CD -- that you cannot install it over top of itself. However, I have read that some people have had BIG problems when they try to uninstall NAV -- like Blue SOD.

Do you think I am better off paying whatever big price Norton asks? I back up my drives with Ghost, so I have a safety net.

i'm willing to bet that more people have had successful uninstalls with nsw than have had bad uninstalls. it's just that you hear about the hard luck stories way more than you would ever hear about the good luck ones. it's a matter of people asking for help (and of course, the requisite complaining) when the software fails to uninstall properly.

i have been installing and uninstalling norton software for the last six years with regularity, on every machine i have owned (big deal, only four <g>), and on multiple operating systems. by and large it has always gone well, or if it hasn't, i have tried it a second time or found the reason for the prob in the knowledge base.

long story short, i think you should uninstall the existing copy of nsw, then install the new.

and why wait til june? to save a couple months on a virus definition subscription? small change, tom. if you have the program now, take advantage of it and install it now.

that's my vote, your mileage may vary.

    good luck

    :)

    Mark,

I heard that the NSW 2003 was practically the same as 2002, except for of course extending the NAV virus update signatures by a year. After all, Live Update updates everything. Are there important new features in 2003?

I have even been using Ghost 2001 and not 02 because that way I don't have to enter a code.

well it sounds like you really would rather not install nsw2003, in which case, i vote for that. it's all up to you, tom. i told you what i think and what my experiences have been.

as for new features, it's all on symantec's site for anyone to review.

yes and no. LU updates definitons, and sometimes programs. but it does not update features. only new version releases do that.

now before the first wave of anti-symantecs hit the board, let me get on out the door!

    good luck, tom

    :)
