Hello all. I'm stumped and need some help. Was preparing an old 233mhz for my granddaughter. Reformated hard drive - no problem. Then loaded win98se - but during this load you know the pc has to restart several times. Well, my pc won't restart. It shuts down. Finally finished loading win98 and it works fine. Programs loaded work fine.....unless it is one of those programs that needs the system to be restarted; then it shuts down. This even happens when I select start/shutdown, select restart and click OK. It shuts down. Any fixes will be greatly appreciated.

Go to the Windows Update site (IE, Tools, Windows Update) and download the "critical updates ". There have been many since 98 first came out and, if my memory serves me correctly, several that correct start/shutdown problems.

I am not 100% sure but I believe the restart/shutdown patch may not be in the critical updates.

It could be now but did not used to be.

You may well be right but it's worth downloading all the critical ones as she's starting with an old 98SE CD. Also some of the updates/patches are cumulative so I would guess it could be incorporated into a later one.

I loaded all the updates to no avail. Also searched microsoft knowledge book but found only things to to with shutdown problems, not restart. Downloaded the special patch for shutdown problems just in case but no help. I have loaded win98se before with no problem so don't understand what is going on now. I did read something on IRQ settings causing this problem but not sure I am willing to make the changes suggested as it might ruin the whole system. Any advice there? thanks to all who replied.

What you need to try is to go into the Control Panel and run the Add New Hardware Wizard. Just let it run and see if it finds something to install.
