outlook express: how to restore from backup

Can anyone there please help me, I know how to backup my outlook express, but I do not know how to retrieve it. I managed to once but the backuped version replaced my current version. I am on XP home edition. Appreciate any help I can get on this.

What exactly have you backed up, mail boxes (*.dbx), the address book or the program itself?

 

I am not sure if this applies to Windows XP (although it should be the version of OE that matters, I would think), but here is MS' official recommendation
