Does anyone know why XP Pro takes so long to shutdown?Anything up to three minutes is how long it takes! Also no "It's now safe to turn off your computer" either.
    Any ideas please?:)

    Hiya tric! :D
Keep in mind that I'm not currently running XP....so .....
have to rely on what others have done.

Every once in a while the service does not shut down instantly and windows gives it a change to shut down on its own before it kills it. This amount of time that windows waits is stored in the system registry. If you modify this setting, then windows will kill the service earlier. To modify the setting, follow the directions below:

    Start Regedit.
    Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control.
    Click on the "Control" Folder.
    Select "WaitToKillServiceTimeout"
Right click on it and select Modify.
Set it a value lower than 2000 (start at 1500....test.....lower & test each lowered setting).

    Also.......
Some people have inadvertantly made XP wipe the Paging File at shutdown. Which seems to slow things up quite a bit.

Open the registry and go here:-
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / SYSTEM / CurrentControlSet / Control / Session Manager / Memory Management
in the right side look for "ClearPageFileAtShutdown" it should have a Data Value of "0 ", if it says "1" change it to "0 ".

    What firewall are you running?

    Slow Shutdown

    Daizy:

My Registry also had a 20000 value in WaitToKillServiceTimeout, and it was taking me 03:33 minutes to shut down. I dropped the value to 200, and together with Karen's Poweroff, got down to 02:05. This is still much too long. I'm going to drop down to 100 for my final shutdown tonight, and see if there's any further improvement. BTW, how low is too low?

Norton Internet Security 2002 (Norton Antivirus 2002 +Norton Personal Firewall 2002) may slow down shuting down/restarting.

With version`s 2003 is no problem with this. Also turn off fast user switching.

    Thanks Davott,
I will look further into Karen's site a little later,it looks quite interesting, lots of handy utilities.
Thanks Dynamic but do not have Norton any longer,my computer was badly infected with viruses and Norton didn't pick them up!!
I had to completely reformat and did not re-instal it.It seems to cause too many problems to too many people's computers.:)

I don't use Norton, either. It's just too pervasive, and causes more problems than it's worth. As to this XP slow shutdown problem, it's absolutely amazing how little authoritative comment there is about it. I've taken almost a dozen books on XP out of the library, and not a one of them even mentions (much less has a cure for) the problem.

    Hello tric171,

Microsoft has a small program available for download [326KB] called BootVis.exe Tool. It is a performance trace visualization tool for use with Windows XP systems.

    Hi Charles,
I already have bootvis, does it help with shutdown problems too?
My problem is that I get to "windows is shutting down" screen, everything shuts down, except for monitor which still shows the same message! I have tried everything possible,Microsoft knowledge base, this forum and any Windows shutdown/powerdown sites I can find but it still does it!!! I now just wait till everything has shutdown, sometimes I have even gone away and left it for hours, then just hit the power switch. It is very frustrating.
    regards and thanks:confused:

I forgot to add that there seems to be nothing in the event log re this and so far no BSD's to give a clue to this.
    regards:confused:

    Hello tric171,

"I already have bootvis, does it help with shutdown problems too? "

No, my appologies, too early in the morning!

    Go here http://www.aumha.org/a/shtdwnxpz.htm

This site collects info on XP shutdown problems and offers explanations and solutions.

    Regards - Charles
