I downloaded some windows security updates, and when the system restarted, a pop up window appeared. It says that Windows encountered an error accessing the system registry and will restart and repair the system registry for you. This has restarted my computer 13 or 14 times and still has the same pop up window with the same message. What can I do to get it to stop?

    Ok Roy

    Do this!

Cleaup up some first by doing the following:

    Cleanups
These are for 95 98 ME only!

Boot to DOS (not shutdown to DOS). While booting hit F8 to startup menu. Chose "command prompt only ".

Type these commands exactly hit enter at the end (do not type the notes that are in parenthesis like this).

del c:\*.swp (may get file not found, is ok)
    del c:\windows\*.swp
    deltree c:\windows\shelli*.*
deltree c:\windows\temp\*.* (answer yes to all) "ALL "
    deltree c:\windows\tempor~1\*.*
    deltree c:\windows\history\*.*
deltree c:\windows\spool\printers\*.*Remove floppy hit CTRL ALT DEL to reboot the computer. After booting back to Windows then a scan & defrag.

After this at command prompt type

    scanreg /restore

It will give you a list of dated registry backups to choose from. Chose one that is older than the day you installed the updates.

Because you have tried to reboot several times they may all be the same date now!

If you can pick an older date then go to step #3 below.

step 2 (No olderer backup so) type

    scanreg /fix

hopefully it will complete, in any case go to step 3

    step 3

Reboot continually hit F8 but this time chose safe mode.

I will be home for next couple hrs so get back to me at this point what ever the results.

    Mike

    For starters.

Try using the F8 Menu at boot up and select command prompt only.

    Type scanerg /restore. Hit enter.

When a menu comes up select a restore point previous to the adding of the update.

From your post this may or may not work as it may indicate that SCANREGISTRY may not be loading at startup.

If you do not get a window with several chocies of restore points then there are other problems.
