Probably seems silly, but I can't find anywhere how to add the defrag routine to my list of scheduled events.

    Any ideas anyone?

I've added it to the scheduled tasks in XP by using the Browse button when stepping through the wizard and pointing it at dfrg.msc in C:\Windows\System32. Now, whether that does more than just fire up the defrag window remains to be seen. ;)

I think that's exactly the problem. Without the switches, all you get is the starting window. But at least that could be used to remind oneself that it needs to be done ;) .

    Thanks, unixfan.

    In summary:

    Usage:
    defrag.exe <volume> [-a] [-f] [-v] [-?]
volume drive letter or mount point (d: or d:\vol\mountpoint)
    -a Analyze only
-f Force defragmentation even if free space is low
    -v Verbose output

This is very simple.Open notepad and type

    defrag C:

    (or defrag <volume> [-a] [-f] [-v]

    -a Analyze only
-f Force defragmentation even if free space is low
    -v Verbose output

Save this file as Defrag C.bat. Now,start task scheduler and point to this file. That`s all.

Only limitation of this is that you must create *.bat files for every drive you have (one for C;one for D....etc.)

    Defrag XP on a Schedule

You can schedule the defrag through the task scheduler. Click on the Browse button in the Wizard and go to the C: drive to the Documents and Settings Folder. Open All Users/Start Menu/Accessories/System Tools. Double click the Disk Defragmenter, complete the information (scheduled time etc.) and it should start just like any other scheduled task. Worked well for me.;)
