My son got into file folder options and "messed around" so he says. Now many of my programs wont respond. Is there any way to reset to the correct extensions? I tried to use system restore but that wont open.

Thanks for any insight into this problem

Copy the file type from this file and paste each that you want to restore into the Run box (Start > Run). Click OK. These are the default XP associations.

Since your in General Forum plus have classified yourself as a "Beginner" and one users system restore may be another's scanreg restore, just to clarify:

What version of windows are you using?

When you say programs are not responding are you getting an error? Trying to determine if virus has robbed you of normal application runs.

I am running XP home version with SP1
No I don't get a error when I attempt to open a program - nothing happens at all. In the Start menu some of my programs had picture icons now there is only a .exe file folder picture.

    Maybe:

The one that fixes .lnk looks like a goody....

Sorry. My instructions above were incomplete. You should open a command window by going to Start > Run and typing: cmd

Then copy and paste the lines, one at a time, from the association file into the command window, hitting enter after each.

To do them all at once, try this (provided you can download and open a zip):
    http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/xp_fileassoc.zip

Running this batch file will restore all the file associations that XP ships with, but not any for installed programs. It's a start.

If you can't download and open it, then get it on a different computer, extract the batch file, and run it in XP from a floppy.

Guess it doesn't matter if it was the "big mousetrap" or the smaller one. They both do the same thing, one batch style, one regpatch.

I'm just glad it was what ya' needed. Thanks for updating post with the results and your welcome.
