    Hi All,

My hard drive is almost full - I have about 1 GB left - it is only a 10. What can I do to free up some space? Can I compress any files?

I have already deleted temporary internet files.

    Any sugestions??

    Thanks.

    Abraxas,

I will try some of your suggestions and see where it takes me.

I would also like to know if I can delete all the updates that I automatically get re: Windows XP. Is it safe to delete those in the Add/Remove section?

    Thanks.

If you delete those updates in the Add/Remove section, you are deleting the updates themselves.

But you can safely delete the backups for those updates if you think you are not going to uninstall them. Look in your Windows folder and have show hidden files and folders enabled. You will see a group of entries near the beginning of the form $NTuninstall.....$. These are safe to delete.

I've been in a similar situation with space. I checked the desktop files of all users and found huge files stored by other users (kids) eg free software downloads. I got them to burn these to CD or delete them.

Have a look in Documents and Settings/ "user name "/cookies. This can fill up with junk. Check for all users.

You might want to consider installing a second physical hard drive. You won't need to reload the operating system. This way, you can transfer all your data files to the second drive, and any new software can be loaded to this drive.

    Hi,

FYI, Windows XP with most included programs (IE 6, Outlook Express, etc.) needs about 2-3 GB. You can compress a NTFS partition, not FAT32. Compress works best with data files. Your post reads like you hav 6 GB of data that probably won't be significanly reduced by getting rid of cookies, temporary files, etc. You may want to ask yourself what you could have stored on your disk that would occupy 6 GB and can be eliminated. IMHO, 10 GB is about the smallest acceptable size for XP. More disk space is in order.

    Good Luck
