Windows 98 Or 98se?

What is the differance between windows 98 and 98 se? I bought a digital camera and the software is compatable with windows 98se. I cannot get it to work with my windows 98 and a friend got it to work with win 98se.

 

SE (Second Edition) is 98 updated with the things that should have been in 98 in the first place.

You will have nearly the same thing if you have been diligent about Windows Update and have all the updates for 98 installed.

I think an update CD for 98 to 98SE is $4.95 or so at Microsoft.

 

Just a silly question, is your Digital Camera USB ?? If yes, than have you installed your USB drivers correctly and enabled USB in your BIOS and if yes do you follow the correct sequence of connecting your Camera to your PC.
I am asking this as I was guilty of not doing so and had many hours of hard work for nothing.

If that is the same CD that I am thinking about THE UPDATE ( $20 ) CD then you deffinetly DO NOT want it. I HAD it but it is now more than likely resting ( not peacefully I hope ) at the bottom of the Hudson River.

It requires 98 to be installed first and DOES NOT do a good job of UPDATING anything. THE 98SE UPGRADE CD is fine.

The problem that PIANOMAN is having is becoming very common. Venders have stopped supporting the original 98.

That is both good and bad.

But on the other hand 98SE is a more solid OS because as Abraxas stated, it does have things that 98FE should have had. And it does have a more solid USB support. That I can vouch for.

But the REAL SAD part is that we are being FORCED to upgrade whether we like it or not. I hate that **** but that is the way it is. ( or at least going to be )

Yes I have done everything that was I was instructed to and did them in order..All drivers were installed corectly. 2 different computers....one with win 98 and the other with win 98se. Camera is usb. Camera will work with win 98se but not with win 98. The camera is a Mustek. The box it came in says it is compatable with win 98se & XP & win 2000 & melinium.

 

That right there should be the clue.

Usually when it says that it will not ( or at least may not ) work in 98 FE.

I myself usually ( or did before I installed 98SE ) look for 95 to be listed. Then I was 98% assured that it would work with 98FE.

Again 98FE is being phased out ( very quickly ) in favor of the much better 98SE.

It is getting to the point where we need to CAREFULLY read the box. A lot of new stuff may not be BACKWARDS compatable.

And again. 98SE is a nicely upgraded 98FE.

And it is at the point of upgrading or do with what we have and maybe even lose out on some of the newer stuff. Sad but true.

I swore that I would never upgrade to 98SE but like yourself I was forced to by some software. And I have not been a bit sorry.

And all of this is not something that I just felt like writing. It is from real life hands on experience.

I myself see the time coming when it may be XP or nothing. And I do not think it is too many years away.

Or whatever new OS M$ has put out, and pulled the support on all other previous releases like they are doing to 98, 98SE, & ME now.

Face it! Bill Gates is running the software, & hardware show both.
