How do I stop Windows from asking for a password on startup.
I have selected "Windows Logon" and deleted all pwl file but it continues to display the password logon (without the statement that if you don't enter a password you won't get the prompt again).

    Thanks

    solanabch,

If I remember right, just pressing enter when asked for the password, should take care of the problem.

I run Win 98. Do not use a password at logon or reboot. My system shows the log on box, then times out and continues to load without any intervention from me. Do you have profiles set up on that box? I understand that if you do not enter a password, you will not need to enter one unless you set up profiles. Might check to see if you are configured to share your system.

I think what you might need to do is go to Control Panel>Passwords>Change user password(If there was one)> Put old password in and leave new blank and click ok. That should get rid of the need for a password on startup.

I should have elaborated on my reply. By pressing "enter" at the password prompt, you will not see the prompt again. This is what I did when I originally installed 98 and I have not seen the password box since. This is not a one time fix, it should completely take care of the problem.

Thank you Alice. That is just what I needed. The other responses were all nonsense, no disrespect intended.

None taken and glad you got what what you needed. That's what this is all about, or so I'm led to believe.

You're welcome but... the other responses were not "all nonsense ", they just did not put everything together in a clear-cut manner! It's not an easy subject to explain off-the cuff! That's why I posted links. I happen to have a very well-organized listing of bookmarks (favorites) and the links were easy for me to find.

I think that bobmc32 and Minnesota Mike's suggestion to register a blank password was a key ingredient. Maybe they didn't explain it clearly enough? DaveMo was also correct on 'windows profiles' as an issue but he didn't go into detail.

The only response I thought was 'off-base' was the one suggesting to remove the cmos battery.... that's a way to clear a bios-level or 'power-on' password but it will not clear a Windows logon password! Do a groups.google.com search on password cmos battery mvp for more on that, for example:

This is apparently a CMOS password. You can remove the CMOS battery (looks like a small watch battery) and the password will fade when the trickle
current fades (give it a couple of minutes just so you don't have to do it
twice, though it really takes much less time). However, it also will cause
all of your CMOS settings (including recognition of your hard drive
    architecture) to disappear too.

If your BIOS supports it, use a BIOS level password. This can only be
circumvented by shorting a jumper on the motherboard or by removing the
    CMOS battery.

    :(

    Okay.

Thanks Alice. I was remembering Don's instruction, from what little memory I have left! :D Just couldn't find the link at that time, but I see that you had it. Tell me again what organization is!

Seriously... solanabch, which one of Alice's links got your problem fixed?

How to Prevent a Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me Logon Prompt at Startup

Sorry if I offended anyone, my comment was only tongue-in-cheek!

    Thanks for trying!
