I have recently installed WinXP pro [FAT32] on a newly built computer. Since it was installed in January I have had 87 notifications of a "Serious Fault" and widows has closed down. the reports vary in content but the majority refer to Internet Explorer, the latest one is:

    AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2600.0 ModName: mshtml.dll
    ModVer: 6.0.2723.2500 Offset: 000d80f6

There pages of O's and 1's and code:'s etc. then:-

The following files will be included in the error report

    C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER9.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt

There have never been any auto restore points made and nor have I been able to create any.

    I have one 60Gig HD with four partitions, C: 14.6 GB [9.27 free] E: 15.6 MB [14.9 MB free] yes Megabytes. [a mistake] F: 14.6 GB [11.4 GB free] and G: 26.5 GB [26 GB free]

I have recently disabled the restore point facility on the 15 MB partition for I believe that you need more space for restore to use. This has not cleared the fault.

When I am browsing using AOL's IE type browser all is well until a web site calls up a new page using IE and the error occurs. It also occurs when I am referred to an update site and when I load IE from my desktop link. I am using IE 6.

I have the Microsoft SP1 CD but can’t get it to load; it freezes so I do not have the update.

I am about reinstall unless anyone has a better Idea. In Win98 you could do a repair on IE, I cant find a way to do it on XP.

There are no conflicts or problems showing in the hardware profiles. Norton has repaired a few reg entries and removed some redundant links and lost file fragments.

    Any Ideas? Regards, Vic A

What kind of internet access, dial, cable or dsl?

    Do you use a firewall?

What virus scanner do you use?

    Do Google search for appcompat.txt

I searched my pc also as I have had the same incident.

In the above text file (appcompat.txt) a number of program entries were listed. Maybe one of those was the problem.

My pc showed the error, promptly rebooted and told me it had recovered. I haven't had a problem since.

    Read the contents of appcompat.txt.
Chances are this is caused by some program you installed and not IE. Did you install any "browsing helpers ", "search bars ", or such in IE?

You can check some program compatibility problems by following these directions:

You may also want to check any browser add-ons with this tool:
