I'm using Windows XP Pro. My question - When I put the computer on Standby I hear something running like a fan. Is this normal during Standby mode? Shouldn't the fan(s) stop ?
    Thanks.

Probably the power supply. Standby doesn't shut the machine down, but only suspends it. Some machines have different standby modes in BIOS, like "Suspend to RAM ". Maintaining the contents of RAM obviously requires electricity.

Hibernation makes an image of RAM to the hard drive and shuts off the power.

I don't use standby or hibernation. Alot of experts in this field agree that neither should be used, just set your monitor to turn of at "x" minutes.
