When I tried to install WORD 6.0 on my computer, it gave me a message that I needed SHARE.EXE which it did not find. I have Windows 98 second edition. Where would I locate this file?

Copy any text file to that C:\windows\command directory and rename it share.exe. Or one of these other directories suggested by MS.com link:

Why are you trying to install such an old version of word?

There are free office suites that are pretty good substitutes for MSOffice such as Star Office. Rose City which is an affiliate of help-net, also offers such a free office program, I believe.

Sadly, Star Office is no longer free but there is a good office suite that's still free...for now, anyway...602 PC Suite.

Thanks for the help. I don't find the information to basic, just very helpul. I already own this version and it does everything that I need. I really prefer WordPerfect for major word processing, but lots of people I know work in Word. So I need this to share some of the things I do in e-mails. I will check out the free ware and let you know how it works.

A chance to tout my favorite, free Office suite (for simple needs such as mine!).

602Pro will save and read files for Word 6, 95, 97, 2000, and XP.

The free StarOffice has been replaced by OpenOffice. It is a little more robust than 602 (Read the news articles at links on the site about how it rivals MS Office). It is larger (49.2 megs) but free and planning to stay that way so updates should not be a problem.
    Version 1.02:

Did you manage to get word installed?

I was so side tracked by the fact that you were using an older version that I really short changed you on the explanation for your share.exe dilemma. Here's a more complete explanation for you or other members who find themselves facing this same problem:

In older operating systems such as dos/windows 3.X, "share.exe" was a program used in DOS that allowed multiple programs to have the same file open. It wasn't used much in DOS, but was necessary when working in Windows 3.x.

The functionality that was provided by share.exe under Win 3.x is now provided by Windows* automatically, so while older programs don't really need to have the share.exe file, they still need to see that it exists, even if in name only.

Since it was so important, those same "older programs" still check to make sure it's there. As stated, all it needs is to see "a file" named share.exe.

What you do was provided by my previous thread. The program will never be the wiser and is now happy. It will be able to find the share.exe file, when looking for one.

I must of been sleeping on the days when StarOffice was reported as no longer free. I did find a link for for version 5.2 that still seems to active. College University though so I don't know if this for the general public.

    =============
I see you have a couple of shared links for free office suites. I hope you try these out.

Thanks to all of you for the GREAT inormation. I have not had time to use any of it yet (work and all that, you know). I have visited the web sites and will probably go with one of the free shareware offerings.

    Patti :)
