Over the past couple of days my laptop has taken a turn for the worse. When I go through a normal shutdown and I get the normal messages: 1. Saving settings, etc. ; 2. Closing network connections. It then goes to a normal blue screen (not the bad blue screen) that I normally see for just a second. It then hangs at this screen and I have to power down the laptop manually. Any clues as to why it does this. Thanks in advance.

    Jeff.

    Are you set to hibernate?

    APM enabled?

    What power options in BIOS?

    xp wont shut down

I am having the same problem with windows xp. i go to the start menu and click turn off computer, then in the next screen I click the turn off button, then windows goes through its shut down proceedures, but instead of saying "it is now safe to turn your computer off ", it restarts. This just recently started, it used to work fine. I haven't changed anything except the live updates off of the web.

See what the Event Viewer says. It sounds like a bad driver (or at least a program that is not terminating properly).

Have you changed or updated any drivers lately? Any new software? You could try uninstalling the software that you installed just before the problem started to see if you can find the responsible application.

How do yo look at the Event Viewer?

The only updating that has been done is the live updates that happen automatically.

I am still pretty new at this, so please be patient with me. Thanks.

    Event viewer -

right-click on my computer then manage and event viewer. If you happen not to have the my computer icon on your desktop, you can also get to it via the control panel.

Admittedly, these errors are sometimes pretty cryptic and uninformative.

One thing you could do is to right-click on each of the items in the left pane and "Clear All Events ". You will be asked if you'd like to save a copy of them. It's up to you, but not a bad idea while we try to figure this out.

Then, with all the events cleared, shut down the computer. If an error occurs, it will be logged in the Viewer and you will know that the newest ones are the ones listed.

Let us know what errors occur.

I'm also having this problem. When I try to shut down windows, it goes through the motions, saving my settings etc, then get to the screen where it says it windows is shutting down. The hard drive activity finishes, and it's left hanging. I have to switch the computer off at the wall. When I power back up I don't get any error messages about Windows not shutting down properly, so I'm assuming that it must be fine apart from the power not actually shutting down.

even - after you've cleared the clutter as Abraxas suggests and been able to locate event warnings or errors you think might be talking about your problem, please post them here in their entirety.

Easy to do. Double-click the error open, click once on the icon below the up/down arrows to send a text copy of the event to your clipboard, open a reply here and paste it in. If there are several that look possible to you, just post em all.

daviec - same suggestions to you that were made to even in this thread. But probably a good idea if you find stuff and want to post it to make a new thread. Otherwise we might easily get confused on who had which problem.

I cannot delete the items in the event viewer. When I right-click on an item, only 3 options come up: Refresh, Properties, and Help, but no delete. Sorry it took so long to get back, I have been out of town for a few days.

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: Application Popup

Here is what I came up with. I dont think this is the trouble, but I could be wrong. This is the only error in the event viewer after I cleared it then restarted:

    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 875
    Date: 3/10/2003
    Time: 2:48:18 PM
    User: N/A
    Computer: JKBENNET
    Description:
Driver Cdr4vsd.SYS has been blocked from loading.
