Hello. Anyone else having problems over the past month with xp critical updates? When I went to the site after several mornings of one notification after another I noticed that the updates are downloading but not installing. Anyone have any advise? Greatly appreciated.

    hi ladysox

just a guess, but some of these critical updates require rebooting. is it possible that with auto update feature enabled, you are not rebooting when necessary? or is reboot built into the auto update process? i don't have first hand knowledge of that because i prefer not to have anything auto updating on my pc's.

as an added thought, and until someone else happens along with something more concrete, perhaps you could try disabling the auto update feature and manually retrieving the updates. it's possible that they might install for you in this manner.

    fingers crossed

    hth

more on installing stubborn critical updates in winxp....

    are the updates

    810833: Security Update (Windows XP)
    329170: Security Update (Windows XP)

if so, someone on a microsoft security admin newsgroup (via google) was having a prob similar to yours and found joy with this mskb article

fwiw, i checked Cryptographic Services in my winxp home machine and the startup type is automatic... and i never have a prob with critical updates installing

edit in: i found one more good looking possible solution that i should include before logging off, ladysox....

    "Try this link:
    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

I had the same problem with updates 810577 and 811630. After you open the link, click on, Problem Downloading/Installing a Software(non-driver) then, click on, 0x80070643 Failure to Install. I followed the instructions in suggestion 1 and the updates installed on my next attempt. "

    good luck

    :)

    Critical Updates

The only problem I've ever encountered with not being able to install critical updates was with an IBM Thinkpad. The machine was loaded to the hilt with software, mostly IBM software that seemed to ***** everything up.
I needed to reimage the machine with the recovery disk (that they didn't include but had to get them to mail to me!)

Maybe not the best answer but it was the only thing that helped me.

    Good luck.
