I'm back with what seems to have been the fix.

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg\Content Type.

Changed the Content Type from image\jpeg to image\jpg. It seems to be working right now.

Thanks a bunch guys for helping me find what so far seems to be the solution to the problem.
I made sure my TIF & History folders were empty, then I went to a page I knew the jpg pics would not show up on, and this time they did.

Thanks again for hanging in there with me.

Deloris--Do you have FrontPage 2000? The MSkb article implies the fix is only for FP, but very close reading suggests it also solves problems with IE--not clear wether FP has to also be installed.

    mr.mark,

Yes, luv, I do know that you were trying to help, and I appreciate it. :)

    Welshjim

No, I don't have Frontpage 2000 on here at all. Just the FrontPage Express that comes with Windows 98, but that don't come with 98SE. However I did manage to confiscate FrontPage Express & install it on SE, but I did that after I noticed the red X problem, so FPE didn't have anything to do with the problem.

I do have OfficeXP Word, & Powerpoint Slide Maker on a Graphics OS, but that OS never goes on the Internet. I just use that one for working in my Graphics programs. Nothing more.

Different OS's for different purposes. I have never had any problems with my other OS's. Just the one I go on the Internet with, it would seem. Naturally, it is the one that is a bit more vulnerable to things going wrong. :)

    Welshjim ,

Yes, & from what I can gather, there are varying reasons for the little troublesome Red X too.

    pippopottomus,

Thanks Vince. Appreciate ya a bunch. :)

Welshjim said I should post this here, so here it is.
    ---------
The red X fix may have worked for being able to see the pics on web pages, but it wrecked havoc with my computer.

I discovered a few days ago that I could not open any .jpg files on my computer with IExplore anymore, which is the default file association for jpeg, & jpg images. Everytime I tried, it would try to open it, but would bounce back and forth between the viewing window, & a File Download dialog box, in a continious loop. Trying to stop this continious looping was a mess. Once it started looping, you had to either push the re-set button on your computer, or do a dozen end tasks to get it to stop. Trying to do a normal shut down did not work. It would not shut down, and would keep right on looping. I kept trying to find an answer to stop the looping, but nothing helped until........

It finally dawned on me that it might have been the Red X fix that caused it. So I went back into Regedit & changed the Content Type back to image\jpeg, and wholah! . I can open .jpg's on my computer again without any problem. So the Red X fix wasn't such a good fix after all. It caused more problems than it cured.

I'd rather not see pics on the web pages than to not be able to open .jpg files on my computer.

I sure hope people who read this post & thought the fix would work on theirs didn't do it, because I don't want anyone else's computer getting messed up like mine did.

It's fine now, but gave me a fit for a few days. I just wanted everyone to know what happened.

Deloris--Do you again get RedX's or has that problem been cured, too?

    Welshjim,

Haven't had a chance to check yet. Will do that as soon as I can & get back to ya.
    -----------------------------

    EDIT:

My problem of the Red X on web pages seems to have mysteriously gone away. Not sure though, since I only checked one page. Since I re-set that setting in the Registry back to what it originally was, my web page Red X problem should be back again, but it don't seem to be. Hmmmmmmmm. Strange!

Well, computers are strange critters anyway. :D

    You say that again.

    And again.

    And still again.

We try to fix what we think is a small problem and it may fix the small problem and create a BIGGER one.

Every so often I get pages with a box and a little Red X. But next time I go to the site everything may be just fine.

Or * SOMETIMES * just refreshing the page works.

    YES. Computers are strange critters.

But I have a strange critter operating another strange critter so I guess together we we make a VERY strange pair of critters.

    Red X....Me to...Got any suggestions ?

I to have the problem with Red Xs.

I am only 3 months old on computers,so I really don't know much of anything about all of the remedies above.

I visit one site which is netholeshot.com ,where the Red X use to be,until I enabled Active X.That site requires Active X to be enabled to play the game,in which I installed & the game worked perfectly, but I still get the RedX on other sites where a picture should be.I am not using any pop-up blockers nor am I using Adaware or ETC.

Is there anything that I can try to get rid of the RED X ?

Like I said,I'm not real smart with PCs,but I am trying to learn.I really like coming to this site daily. It has really helped to answer some questions that I have had.

Thanks in advance for any help !
    ;)

    Drag Racer7272,

Since my fix caused more problems than it cured, & I had to switch it back, and none of the other ideas helped, I am plum out of ideas for a fix. :D

Since so many people seem to have this problem, I am inclined to believe it is not so much the computers, or the OS's. I finally was able to make a .jpg file using the CMYK color format. When I tried to open it, all I got was the dreaded red X, so I'm thinking that people are using that color format for .jpg files a lot more on web pages these days, and IE does not recognize it. IE recognizes the RGB color format. I know that I didn't used to have a red X problem until just a few months ago. It began as an infrequent occurance. Over time, it got to be more frequent & on more web sites to the point it got annoying.

Does anyone know if Opera recognizes the CMYK color format?

I am using both Netscape and IE.

As of yet I have not seen any Red X in Netsacpe.

    Even on the same sites.

Therefore I have to go along with Deloris as to the problem being maybe being somewhere other than our Computer.
