    Hello,

I use IE6 & W98 and had no trouble until about 10 days ago. I haven't changed any settings and no one else uses my computer.

    Problems:

Rt. click/save picture as only allows .bmp and no longer shows .gif, .jpg, .jpeg etc.

If I attempt to d/l a file from a website, I get a cannot d/l from website or cannot find try again later message instead of the usual box popping up asking me where I want to save to. I have checked from another computer and the files download fine. So it's not the sites...it's my computer.

Is there a fix for this? I have searched the Windows site and tried deleting history and cache but this doesn't fix the problems. You know how searches at the Windows site goes....ugh!

Thanks for any help you can give.

    Sheila

There is several suggestions at this site that you may not have tried:
    http://www.valink.com/jeep/IE.Tips.htm

You might want to have a look at your downloaded program files
    tools->internet options->settings->view objects

If any say damaged or unknown delete them and retry the download.

Also, if you haven't already done so, run a repair on ie6
go to add/remove programs in the control panel then click ie6 and then you will be presented with the option to run a repair.
When you deleted your temporary internet files did you check "delete all offine content" as well? if not, check it and try again.
You might also want to clean up your cookies if you haven't already done so.

I know it's very frustrating when everything is working fine one day and then disaster strikes the next.
I hope that these suggestions help!
Post back and let us know how it goes.

    :)

Seems empting IE history is the fix that works most often. If doing this within windows produces "no joy ", you may have to do this in dos to include the index.dat file in this cleanup, just to be thorough in eliminating IE's temp history as the problem....

Also here's ms.com's link with a few more causes and fixes:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q260650

Please remember to update post with the fix that worked for you....

There's a great little program called Spider that cleans up your
index.dat file in your temporary internet files. It also cleans other internet temp files depending on what you set it to do.
    Here's the link

    Update:

Here's where I am at this point. Although I had disk cleanup set up through task manager, it obviously wasn't cleaning up temp internet files. I thought I had them all cleaned out and found one folder with over 34,000 files in it! After 2 hours, they're all deleted and I'm able to download from websites again.

My assumption is that it's ok to delete desktop.ini files from temporary internet folders. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm also curious about finding the folder called Content.IE5 under Temporary Internet Files and not Content.IE6. Guess it doesn't matter really...who cares haha.

I did find two unknowns under tools->internet options->settings->view objects and deleted them. I also did the IE6 repair. Those gave no success. It seems deleting the mass of temp files took care of it.

So where I am at this point:
Is it ok to delete from temp internet files - desktop.ini (i assume yes)

    Any thoughts on:
Still showing only .bmp available for rt. click save picture as but I do know how to get around that glitch....very inconvenient however. :)

I'm going now to follow all the links you all provided. All of your help is much appreciated. My heartiest of thanks!

Try this workaround suggested by microsoft:

Open the Temporary Internet Files directory and locate the image that you attempted to save.
Right click the image and click Open.
When the image loads into Internet Explorer, right click the image and click Save Picture As. The correct file type and name should be correct.

Note: I also have content.IE5- basically I think it was there from the previous version of IE and the folder name didn't change with IE6. The spider program I told you about will delete all those temp files for you and keep things really clean. The index.dat file usually can't be deleted through windows- Spider cleans it upon rebooting your computer (outside of windows).
The index.dat file when recreated is 32kb. It keeps on growing even when you use disk cleanup to clean out your temp files. When you choose to delete offline content through IE6- the temp files in all the strange numbered folders are deleted but the index.dat file is untouched.

Thanks jazcan, I'll give Spider a whirl. Wow, even my surfing is faster with all the cleaning up I've been doing today.

Yes, I did try the fix there and went as far as deleting all the files in the Downloads folder with no luck.

I am able to rt. click and type in the correct extention like .gif when I know it. Worst case I can accept as a .bmp and change it to the format I need.

    Thanks for your help,
    Sheila

sc3--I understand you did try the fix in paragraphs 3 and 4 in that article. There is one more fix in the More Information section at the bottom of the page.
