I'm currently running Win 98 SE. Does Windows XP Home Edition allow you to use the Upgrade version of XP as long as you can show proof of a previous version of windows i.e. Win 95 or Win 98?

Is is true that Win XP allows use of the CD x number of times after which it's no good? This would seriously hurt people who regularly reinstall their OS to clean things up.

You can upgrade from Win98 and WinME but not from Win95 or other earlier versions.

You have to activate Your copy of WinXP over the internet. You can do this on one computer only.

You can re-install WinXP on the same computer without re-activating if You copy and save one file to a floppy and put it back after re-installation.
This file is located in the WINDOWS\system32 directory and the name is wpa.dbl.

If You do a search on Windows BBS for "Windows XP activation ", I´m sure You´ll find a lot of information in older posts.

If You change a lot of the hardware You might need to re-activate since You´ve changed the configuration from which the wpa.dbl file was created but under normal conditions You won´t need to.

I've heard nothing but good reports of MS reaction to multiple activations. They will even allow you to format one computer and use the CD on another. They do not seem to limit the total number of activations, but after a number (10, possibly), you will need to activate by phone. They are apparently cordial and understanding.

There is no limit built in to the CD on how many times it can be used and I don't know how they could pull that off, anyway, with present CD technology.

AceH - if you haven't already bought the OS, take a serious look at some of the XP-home vs. XP-Pro comparisons and make sure which one you want. 'Cause changing your mind later if you get home and then want Pro will cost you quite a bit.
