My Disc Cleanup utility stopped working for some unknown reason about a month ago. I tried doing a non-destructive format but it didn't do any good. I try to remove all the temp files by using the search option but I'm afraid I am not getting them all. I don't know why the cleanup stopped working and I have no clue what to do to fix it...I really don't want to do a destructive format so can you guys please help?

    Thank you

I don't know what you mean by NON-DESTRUCTIVE format!!! Smile!

Why would you try any kind of format on something so simple?

Do you have problems that you think a cleanup would fix?

What utility quit working, do you mean Disk cleanup in system tools?

    Do this:

    Configure CleanMgr to max settings
    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sageset:1
The above need only be ran once (these settings will be remembered as the default until another sageset is ran).

It will present a menu select all except compress, then

    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sagerun:1
As long as /sageset above has been ran on this computer from now on the /sagerun is the only thing that needs to run.

    OK! Spoiled

So how did you determine that Disk cleanup is not working? Does it give some error?

Don't mean to confuse but I don't have a magic wand that will fix it magically, you will have to do something!

So the steps I gave repeated and sipplified below will configure Disk Cleanup for settings that may have been lost!

    Click Start
    click Run
    type
    cleanmgr /sageset:1
    hit enter
it will give a menu, click to check all but compress
    click ok

    then

    Click Start
    click Run
    type
    cleanmgr /sagerun:1
    hit enter

    It will run Disk cleanup!

the reason I know it stopped working is because after I click on the disk cleanup the little box that says "calculating how much space you can free up" just sits there. I have let it sit for an hour and nothing happens beyond that. Ok I have done exactly what you said...I got the menu that you said to click off everything but compress files...then i typed the next thing into the run box like you said...clicked ok but nothing happened. This is so annoying!

Ok so now we know you have another problem.

Do you have any other things you have noticed that don't bother you so much but you did not mention?

Print out my last message so you will have it available to read.

    then do the following

    Click Start
    click Run
    type

    chkdsk /f

    hit enter

it will tell you it will need to reboot to finish this, so reboot.

    After it comes back

Put WinXp CD in drive so it will be available, then

    Click Start
    click Run
    type

    sfc /scannow

    hit enter

    When this completes

    restart the computer

while booting tap F8 key to get boot menu

    chose safe mode

Safe mode looks very plain and basic so no worry.

Repeat the steps I had you print (Cleanmgr /sageset:1)

    Hopefully it should run now?

Get back to me with "Good News "!

OK, hopefully the needed files are on the computer and XP knows where to find them.

So do the steps without CD, if it asks for it ,then either abort or skip to next!

    Hello Spoiled,

I'm not familiar with HP systems, but they must provide some means to at least repair the OS, either through something labeled "recovery" disc or though "hidden" partitions on your drive to get back to "factory" settings. Look thru your documentation that came with your system.

    Regards - Charles

Normally HP puts this in a hidden partition and windows is configured to find it!

Ok..followed your instructions to the T...no go..same as before....the cleanup box will popup..it will say that it is calculating how much space will be freed...then under it it says scanning:compressed files (even tho that box was unchecked) and it just sits there and never goes any further.

Go to Kelly's Korner, scroll down to item #84, click on it to start the download, remember where you downloaded it to, then double click (or single click, depending on how you have your machine set up) on it to run it. If all goes as it should, your Disk Cleanup utility should be back.

Let us know if it worked.

    Ok Spoiled

If you want to keep going we will now do some cleanups thru special cleanup programs.

There may be some other factor causing this problem.

    Registry and System cleaners

    EasyClean1.7 http://gswi.com/downloads.htm
Run only unnecessary files and registry clean delete all it finds. If you have ME or XP in the "Unnessesary Files" type the word HELP in the skip box. Do not do Duplicate files!

    RegScrubXP http://home.carolina.rr.com/lexunfreeware/RegScrubXP/RegScrubXP.htm
    NOTE: W2K and XP only
Select RegScrub finds problems and remove all it finds.

    Disk Clean-up utility

    Hi Spoiled and all,

I am running XP on a HP Pavilion and ie6 and having the same problem when I try to run the disk cleanup. It starts but just hangs there for hours. Is there any other suggestions or does anyone else have this problem?

    Editing Registry

    1. Type Regedit in Start - Run
    2. Navigate to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersi
    on\Explorer\Volume Caches
    3. Open "Compress Old Files" folderI
    4. Delete all files in this folder
    5. Reboot
    6. Run Disk Cleanup

I don't have an HP machine. You might have something extra in there. This is where Kelly's points too. I just edited my registry and it worked for me.
This was before there were any fixes on the internet. So you had to do it manually.

    Disk Clean-up

Thank you, thank you Maggie. Your solutions worked liked a charm. I'm a bit stubborn and have been struggling with this
problem for about a month. I shall forever be indebted to you.
