HEY GUYS AND GALS! I need advice on some possible settings on my CPR - OK? Your opinions on the following........
    OPTIMIZE COM PORTS
    GIVE DOS MORE MEMORY
    INCREASE DMA BUFFER SIZE
    INCREASE MAX BREAK POINTS
    EXPAND SPARE STACK PAGES
    OPTIMIZE WINDOWS UPDATE TIME

    EXPAND ICON CACHE
    ADD 008 FIX
    OPTIMIZE MAPPED CACHE

I would really appreciate your wisdom and experience to help me make the right choices here and not make another mess!:) THANK YOU. M

    M,
I do not know what a CPR is, but if it is running Win98 or SE, I would not change these basic DOS settings by "tweaking" them.
In my experience, the DOS default settings are OK.
Why do you want to make any changes ?
    Are you having problems/errors ?
    regards
PS CPR = Compact Presario - right ?

    MERLIN!

HEY MERLIN! Thanks for the reply - do you mean that ALL those settings are DOS settings? CPR 2000 is a windows tuning utility I found - does a bunch of stuff really - cleaning and scaning and such plus these and other settings to adjust if wanted. M

    M.
Windows is a user interface for the DOS Operating system.
The "tweaks" you want to try will be unlikely to improve anything
as Win98, Win98se are pretty good at setting things up optimally.
If your PC runs OK - why tweak it ? You may do more harm than good.
I have an idea you will try some of the tweaks anyway - but make sure you can get your system back to it's previous working
    set-up.
    regards

    I agree with merlin

If it ain't broke or no problems exist leave it alone.

With some Peak & Tweaks if you change one thing something else may need to be changed to match ( or compensate for ) it. and if not done correctly unneeded problems may arise.

MY Peaks and Tweaks consist of:

#1 Maintaining user control of what loads at startup.
#2 Maintaining user control of which and how many programs are running at the same. Sometimes a certain combination may be a NO-NO.
#3 ( and maybe should be #1 ) Stop a lot of USELESS RAM & RESOURCE hogging Microsoft software from loading at startup and runing in the background. MS Office is one. Real Player is another. If these two do happen to be both loaded at startup it may KILL the best of machines.
#4 Run Ad-Aware and/or SpyBot to keep the Spyware etc to a minimum ( or none ).

And last but not least. Seing as how we are in the Win98 forum it may be best to leave the DOS settings alone. Win98 does a good job of handling DOS. ( Or does if I keep my fingers out of the pie. )

    Deffinetly

    NOT TO TWEAK!

HEY GUYS AND GALS! OK! I GET THE POINT!;) My computer IS running fine - I just have this crazy obsession to make it work at 100% ! BUT - I do get into a lot of messes - so I will try to control myself and leave well enough alone. I promise!:) Thanks for the reality check. m By the way - I just plain got rid of that CPR anyway - gave me an error run-time thing so....... bye bye. Please ignore my other posts on the subject if you see them.

You have to believe that the people at MS have a pretty good understanding of Windows and have already "tweaked" it for best performance.

On the other hand, my philosophy of tweaking is that defaults are settings that are good for the greatest number of machines, an average. Tweaking is the process of further customization so that the parameters fit your machine to a greater degree.

When you are feeling totally at home with your system, try your tweaks, one at a time, with a testing interval between them, and you'll be better able to tell if they help, hurt, or do nothing at all.
