    I've come home to my parents for a holiday and am trying to sort out their PC. Its set up as dual boot - WinME on c:, and Win2k on d: . what i'd like to do, is get rid of the ME partition, and keep the 2k partition, then upgrade the 2k partition to XP. I want to upgrade the 2k partition and NOT the ME partition as the majority of programs, data, etc are on the 2k, and i can handle loosing the stuff on ME that i cant migrate. I'm guessing that ppls first suggestions will be to get partition magic. ok, got that, how would ppl suggest i take it from there? that is, to get rid of ME, go down to one partition and upgrade 2k to XP.

    thanks in advance.

    Open PM.

    Delete ME partition.

    Resize 2K to include all old ME partition space.

    Upgrade 2K to XP.

    Thanks for the reply. So I presume that its fine to delete ME through PM, even though ME is on :, the primary partition? will PM sort out the master boot record, etc?

    hold on a second

    You better copy the boot.ini first!!!! It is on C: & if you delete C: you will boot to a no menu! Been here/there PAIN:eek:
    Place the boot.ini on a disket. If you can not find it then open windows explorer click view/folder then select the view tab * uncheck show hidden files & folders. Refresh & you should see the ini. You should edit the line out that points to first+windows me or something like that. I don't use ME. When you have removed ME from the line make it look like this only not with winxo of course as this is my boot.ini. You would prolly want windows 2000 blah blah blah instead. Save the file. Oh yeah, if ya can't write to it right click the file before opening select properties & take out the "write only" atribute/ save/exit now you can edit. do the reverse to make the atribute read only after all is well again

    [boot loader]
    timeout=3
    [operating systems]
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect:D

    Rancher - if you ever get bit like that again, the recovery console and running the fixboot command should fix things up nicely. And pretty painlessly.
