I am working on a friend's Windows 2000 PC absolutely overrun by viruses. System files along with everything else are infected.

Assuming that the newly installed antivirus software will prevent anything from getting into memory and reinfecting them, I am hoping to restore system files from CD-ROM with

    sfc /scannow

I only have a w2k professional CD, are the files to different than the standard win2000 currently installed?

    thx!

What version of Windows 2000 is your friend using? There are four versions of Windows 2000:

    Windows 2000 Professional
    Windows 2000 Server
    Windows 2000 Advanced Server
    Windows 2000 Datacenter Server

If you he's running Windows 2000 Professional you're good to go.
