Recently I had to reformat (twice) my Dell Inspiron 7000's HD. Computer has Pentium II, 256 K RAM, 6Mb HD with 4Mb free, Win98. I had a TDK 24/10/40x RW drive attatched through a USB1.0 hub and was able to write to a TDK 10X disk using InCD. After reformatting it worked once or twice, then a dialog said disk was not formatted. Have tried reformatting disk numerous times, but receive the message: "[005a-0005-0024-0000]Illegal Request Error occurred, Reboot your system or drive and try again. Insert a new disc." Current driver for InCD on the TDK is version 3.51.91 (latest on Nero site) downloaded and installed. TDK has said I should install driver with only systray & explorer running and should do the same when reformatting the RW disk. Doing all this helps not at all. I get a similar message when trying to "image" (if that's the right term) my HD using Nero Burning and its latest driver. These messages come at the very end of the process being run. TDK has stopped returning my, I assure you, polite email.

I'd try the old "reinstall Windows" trick...

One, not very satisfactory, solution that works sometimes is to eject the CD after receiving this message, reinserting it and doing a Quick Format. It seems the format was actually successful the first time.

As you probably know, you can't use Nero with a CD you have used previously with InCD since they use incompatible file formats. You can only image with Nero on a clean CD.

teorn & Abraxis--Thanks for your replies. I am reluctant to reinstall Win98, having done that twice subsequent to reformatting the HD twice and just prior to the problem reported. Abraxis' solution didn't work, and when on my own I tried reinstalling Nero, the whole system slowed down so catastrophically (eg, the Start menu only progressed to the next step when the current one was clicked) that I uninstalled InCD and, being unable to uninstall Nero, deleted the aheadNero folder. Now the sysem without those programs seems to work normally. I am about to call in a local Tech to fix this problem.
