    Hmmmm

This can be several things or only 1. You can remove the checkmark from the line that has windows fast shutdown. This is located in msconfig. Start/Run type msconfig & I beleive its on the startup or advanced tab. Another thing is to disable apm in the bios. If ya don't know how post back so we know where you are in tech stuff other wise we can sound rather childish, eh:)

    Shutdown Downers

Its not uncommon to experience errors or freezes as Windows shuts down. This can be a difficult issue to pin down. Common causes for shutdown problems include faulty hardware, damaged or conflicting device drivers, or even something as simple as a corrupted Close Windows sound file. The overall process of troubleshooting this problem is vast, so well touch on the basics.

The first step. Initially, its best to use the clean boot method described previously to troubleshoot the problem. This should help isolate the problem and eliminate it, but because this can be a lengthy process, weve added some quick tips below for those that like to cut to the chase.

Disable the Close Windows sound file. Try disabling the Close Windows sound file to see if thats the source of your problem. Click the Start button, Settings, Control Panel, and double-click the Sounds And Multimedia icon. Select the No Sounds scheme, which will disable all system sounds (you can re-enable them later), click OK, and then try shutting down the system.

Turn off Advanced Power Management. Another quick fix is turning off advanced power management (that is, if the machine is a desktop computer and not a notebook). However, this tip may not apply to all machines.

If it does apply to your computer, right-click My Computer, select Properties, and choose the Device Manager tab. Double-click the System Devices branch to expand it, double-click Advanced Power Management in the device list, and then click the Settings tab. Finally, click to select Force APM 1.0 Mode And Disable Power Status Polling checkboxes. Click OK to close all open windows, and then restart your computer.

Disable static VXD files. Disabling static VXD files is another alternative that can help determine the source of a shutdown problem. Many of the VXD files Microsoft recommends disabling and/or reinstalling are Microsoft networking files, so a quick and easy test is to right-click Network Neighborhood and select Properties. Youll need to remove all of the installed protocols, clients, and other services by highlighting each service and clicking Remove, but first make sure you write down all necessary configuration information for these settings so you can reinstall them later. Once this is done, reboot your computer, and then try shutting it down again to see if the problem is now solved.
