    Long start up???????????

    Ok Geeks,

Got a question. I have searched all over this forum for a solution to my problem. Here is the deal.

I have a dual boot machine running w2k (using ntfs) and w98 (fat32). I have been running it for at least a year now. Everything has been fine, until about 3 or 4 months ago. I haven't done anything cause, I have a very high tolerance level of the irritation demons. I have gotten to the point that it is time to fix it. I have tried researching it off and on since. All this aside, here we go.

When ever I boot up or restart I get the normal splash screen which is the IBM/ Aptiva logo. Normally after this, I should get the dual boot menu considerably fast, but for some odd reason now, it takes over a minute to get to the dual boot menu. Once I get there everything is fine. I am able to pick and choose which os to start up. So my problem is, why is it taking so long to get to the boot menu. I was leaning towards the mbr. Boot.ini seems to look fine. I was going to attempt a fixmbr, but I wanted some input before I went that route. So any help would be appreciated. Everything seems to be so close, but no cigar.

Thanks, Be Cool and remain happy!

The first thing I would do is to fdisk the MBR by booting to DOS and typing fdisk /mbr. This is assuming that you're dual-booting off a single partition or if you are on a dual boot partition, that you haven't gone to the masssive trouble of making D: your Windows98 partition.

Also, have you installed any more RAM recently? Often the memory count takes place behind the boot logo screen, and if you have it triple checking the RAM, it can take some time. If that's the deal, go into your BIOS. Try activating the quickboot setting, if it's there, or modifying your bootup memory check. I'm not sure which BIOS version IBM likes to utilize, so I can't give you exact instructions. The verbiage may be off a little. Good luck.

    Both.

fdisk /mbr on the 98 partition.

    fixboot on the 2K/NTFS partition.

That might fix your problems. But probably not and if not, post back with any results of the MBR repairs.
