His previous OS was Windows 98 SE, so... this is what I was doing:

    Startup Disk > Restart > OPTION #2 > format c: - Enter > y "“ Enter > E: - Enter > Insert Windows XP CD in CD-ROM > setup "“ Enter...

As You can see, I was trying CLEAN installation, but... after formating hard disk, I couldnt start installation of Windows XP! I´m so sorry but I couldnt remember exactly ½words½... something like... ½This... couldnt start from DOS...½

I was surprised... because... I was install Windows XP from DOS at my PC!

So... I had to install Windows 98 SE AGAIN, and than... had to UPGRADE to Windows XP!

PLEASE... could someone explaine it to my why is this happen at my friend PC?
I would like to LEARN... was I able to do something else instead installing Windows 98 SE again, before upgradeing to Windows XP?

    THANK YOU!!!

    Best Regards

I installed WinXP on my friends PC a few weeks ago.

I started by using his old Win98 startup disk to use FDISK to repartition his harddrive, simply because I´m used to it. Next I formatted his partitions in FAT32.

When I was done I removed the Win98 startup disk, inserted the WinXP CD and re-booted from it.

During setup I chose to maintain the partitons as they were but I let the installer re-format in NTFS and when the installation was complete I re-formated the non-system partition in NTFS too.

If Your friends computer cannot boot from the CD then this may be changed in a BIOS-setting.
I have chosen Floppy, CD and HardDisk in that order.

    HTH,

    Running Setup

There are a few ways to invoke setup. The easiest way is to load the Windows XP CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive, and reboot your computer. Your BIOS needs to support booting from the CD-ROM, but most computers have had this support for the past 2-4 years. It might be necessary to enable this in your BIOS. Consult your computer/motherboard manual about this.

If your computer doesn't support booting from the CD-ROM drive, you will either have to boot from your previous OS, or from a bootable floppy drive.

If you boot from your previous OS, the Windows XP setup will start as soon as you pop the CD in your drive. If you boot from a floppy (remember, you need to have support for your CD-ROM and the Windows 98 start disk includes this), you will have to change to the CD-ROM drive, and then you will have to run winnt.exe from the I386 directory.

Christer explained it to you. XP install can be started from a boot floppy but it requires a set of 6 before loading the CD rather than the 1 that ME needs (or 4 for NT or 5 for 2K). And he gave you a link for getting the floppies.

I also (tried) to explain it: You are trying to start Setup.exe from the root of the CD-ROM. This won't work.

You have to start winnt.exe located in the /i386 directory on the CD-ROM. That will start in DOS.
