This evening I discovered my computer has no sound. I can't get it to make a peep. I've tried the following things:

    * Speakers are installed and have power.

    * Went to Control Panel > System > Device Manager and audio device is listed and nothing appears amiss. It is the preferred device and is not disabled.

    * Have gone through the Windows 98 Sound Troubleshooting, all to no avail.

    * Reinstalled audio drivers that came with computer. No dice.

    * Volume control checked ok. Nothing muted. Did notice though that under the "Advanced" button that both Bass and Treble sliders are at their lowest setting and I cannot change them for some reason. Could this be the problem?

My computer is a Compaq Presario 5304 with Windows 98 SE. I have a 500mhz AMD processor with 316mb of RAM.

I recently had a video card installed, along with Directx 9.0, I believe, but I removed the video card because of my computer's lack of decent power supply.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

On the next menu select yesterdays registry to restore OK enter restart. This will start your box & if some thing happened today this will fix it unless it's Hardware:D

Yeah, I checked the volume knob....first!

Come to think of it, I recently used some registry cleaning software and drive cleaning software. Could that be the culprit?

Wouldn't reloading my audio drivers cure that ailment if that were the case?

Also didn't say you checked to make sure the speakers are plugged into the correct port.

i know that you said nothing muted, but just double-checking that the mute box is not checked on the speaker icon in the systray...

sometimes it just checks itself in win98 for no apparent reason

come to think of it, a lot of stuff happens in win98 for no apparent reason!

Now there is something new to me. I personally have never seen or heard of that one. Guess I am not too old to learn

    Now back to MS Turkeyhunter

Wouldn't reloading my audio drivers cure that ailment if that were the case?

It should. But who knows ? But I have had both yes and no experiences.

I see what * MAY BE * be a clue ( or two ) here. Did you add the card yourself or have someone else do it ?

Does this mean that you have ( or had ) onboard Audio ( no card ) originally ?

If so, this may well be a problem with setting in the BIOS. This may have made things look like a bad PS also ( I think. Not 100% sure though )

By you having a Compaq I do not know what to tell you about getting to it as I do not know.

    A TOUGH problem. ( cause )

Have you changed any other hardware ?

Even TOUGHER problem ( cause ) that is VERY often overlooked or not even thought of. And I myself do not like thinking of it either.

During the course of events of messing with the Audio there is a * POSSIBILITY * that an IRQ conflict has been created between the Auido and another piece of Hardware. ( Most offten an Internal Modem ).

The Sad, Bad, Pain in the Butt part here is that if the confilict does exist it may not ( and usually does not ) show up in the device manager.

You could go to the Device Manager and Check the properties of MY Computer and view by IRQ and this will ( or should ) tell you what is using what IRQ. And if a Modem and the Audio are trying to use the same one things may not work.

    Hey mr.mark

98 is no worse than anyother OS right from the good old DOS right on up to and including XP.

    Something that I forgot.

IF this is a case of onboard Audio, there may well be MotherBoard drivers that need to be re-installed.

I believe my Via 4 in 1 drivers did have and audio part.

If this does turn out to be an IRQ ( hardware ) conflict it has NOTHING to do with 98. It will ( or can ) happen in any OS.
