Hi all, have a new one here... quite frenquently
in the grey area at bottom of screen (win 98) "blank" rectangles come up and sit there. They only disappear when I click on them. As this only happens in Netscape should I be posting there also? Sorry if seems confusing

Where they come from or who makes them I have no idea either.

But they do appear on my screen occasionly. Yesterday I had two of them.

But I believe some of them may have appeared when I closed a POP-Up Window.

They may also be there more than I think because I have the Taskbar on Auto Hide.

    I have 98 SE and IE6 SP1

You may want to check and see if a piece of adware, spyware, or scumware is installed on your machine. Hit ctrl+alt+del when all your programs are shut down and make a list of everything that's running and post that. It'll be very useful information.

I do not think it has anything to do with what is running.

If error messages were coming up with them then it might be different. But there are no errors. Nothing hangs up ( freezes ) or even hesitates in any way, as I believe would happen if it were a conflict.

I believe it is strickly Internet related.

I noticed again just a few minutes ago. The blanks appeared after I closed a couple of Pop-ups.

I agree with Billy Bob here.
I can sometimes get an incorrect Start Menu button.
Clearing IE cache and doing a reg clean fixes it.
Since I updated IE 6 to SP1, no problems but that may be a coincidence.
    Anyway, recommend you try

Can only tell you "computers are complex machines" and mine can be very different from all others, BUT... The ghost button has showed itself on my taskbar as well. I have been running SP1 upgrade for IE6.0 for some time and, thanks to the help I've gotten on this site, I'm free of Adware and Spyware riff raff. Still the ghost appears, and is eaisly dismissed. I tell my self it's caused by a sluggish processor or temperory memory bottleneck. I've never worried about it, but perhaps I should?.

Dont sweat the small stuff. Wait till things grow out of control, then blame the republicans.

I'm not fully sure yet but I think the taskbar ghosts "might" be caused by a virus or worm. I was getting the ghosts comming up like crazy but after a complete virus scan and found something the ghosts have disappeared. (hope I'm right on this)

Had this 'ghost' taskbar problem a few years ago on my Win98se computer.
Seemed to have been caused by 2 windows updates.
Thet were - Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package
    - Mapped Drives Shutdown Update

When I removed these 2 items by uninstalling at Update site ( or through reading MS bulletins), the ghost problems went away.
Hope this is of some help.
