Temporary Internet Files

    I know how to delete temporary internet files and do so on a regular basis to save disc space. However, when I look in the file with the jpg extension I see all kinds of temporary internet files that have not been deleted. I have been deleting them one by one which is a pain. Is there any easier way to eliminate these files?:confused:

    Temporary internet files

    When I do so --I delete files once and then again this time though marking delete offline content...clear history also
    this is best done from a fresh startup before connecting
    from control panel - internet options,

    I have Windows 98 and IE version 6. I am not sure I understand how to work offline. Can you give me directions?
    I do delete history on a regular basis. It is basically when I go into find...look at jpg files and a whole list of files with jpg extension comes up. A lot of them are system and/or program files which I need but there are a lot of temp internet files. It is these files which clutter the system and I would like to get rid of them. Currently I am deleting them one at a time and want to find a quicker way of doing it.

    Im not sure I understand --where are you lookin at these jpg's ?
    which file (name)and where ?
    I go into find<<<<<<<<?

    I run win me so things are slightly differant,

    I´m not sure what You mean by this, you can´t look into a jpg-file and find other files.

    Neither am I sure of how You clear You Temporary Internet Files so, I´ll tell You how I do it, beware if my translation of the terms from swedish to english isn´t totally correct:

    In IE click TOOLS and OPTIONS.

    In the middle You have the possibility to REMOVE COOKIES by clicking the button to the left. Most cookies you can live without but some keeps you looged in on some sites so, clearing the cookies will promt a re-login on those sites.

    You can REMOVE TIFs by clicking the center button and if You in the popup window tick the "remove offline ..." it clears all of it.

    Finally the button to the right will let You change some settings. You can limit the size of the TIF-folder. Some people say that some 10MB is enough and others say some 100MB, that will be Your decision. When the limit is reached the oldest entries are replaced by new entries.

    At the bottom You can CLEAR THE HISTORY and also change the time the history is saved.
    I visit some fora where a thread that I have read is displayed in a different colour to the un-read threads. This makes it convenient to find new posts. If I clear the history the colour of all messages is that of the un-read ones. I have set mine to 30 days, after that it clears itself.

    After this, if You check the folders in Explorer they should all be empty, apart from one or two dat-files and possibly ini-files which are system files that cannot be removed easily.

    I agree with everything you said and to a large extent I do all of these things.
    Where I find these files is if you go on the start menu and click find then files/folders. In the dialogue box I type jpg. This lists al pile of files; some are program files, system files which need to be there. However, there are a lot of files which are temporary internet files which are web sites which have been visited i.e. newspapers across the country.

    Strange ...... :confused: ...... it shouldn´t matter if You´re on Win98 and I´m on WinME, it should be the same with IE6.

    1) If I click start - find - files or folders and search for *.jpg I find a lot of them but not a single one in the TIF-folder.

    2) If I go to explorer and C:\windows\temporary internet files and do the search directly in the TIF-folder, then I find a few houndred jpg-files.

    Obviously my search from the start button (#1) doesn´t include the TIF-folder.

    Next I cleared my TIFs as described above and did a new search.
    #1, of course showed the same files as before but #2 showed no jpg-files and no other TIFs at all, they were gone.
    (My cookies were there since I didn´t remove them.)

    I know I am probably driving you crazy with this thing and will not belabour it beyond this message.
    I simply go to start menu, press find and type in jpg (not*jpg) and a number of jpg files come up. Some of these are temp internet/content files and these are the ones I want to get rid of.

    Nope, You´re not driving me crazy, it takes more than that ...... :D ......

    The difference between our searches is that I´ve searched for files with the file extension *.jpg whereas You´ve searched for any name containing the letters jpg in that order, which mostly are files with that extension.

    Let´s hope someone else steps in and solves Your dilemma!

    I run into this once in a while. For some reason they don't always seem to all get deleted. I just delete them from dos. I'm of the opinion it's better to use dos anyway as it also deletes the index.dat which won't ever be deleted in windows. Give it a try. It might even straighten out your problem of not being able to delete them in windows (no guarantees). Boot to a dos prompt and type the following line followed by the enter key.

    deltree c:\windows\tempor~1

    Note the space between deltree and c: . It needs to be there. This will delete the folder and all. When you restart, windows will make a new one.

    To do a good cleanup in dos, copy and paste the following lines into Notepad and Save As the name "Clean.Bat ", into the Windows folder. Be sure it doesn't have the txt extension when done, or it will not work. To use, just Restart in Dos Mode, type in clean and hit enter, then reboot. All of this will be recreated when windows restarts.

    smartdrv
    scanreg /opt
    del c:\windows\win386.swp
    deltree /y c:\windows\cookies
    deltree /y c:\windows\history
    deltree /y c:\windows\temp
    deltree /y c:\windows\tempor~1

    If you decide to enter these commands at the prompt manually, omit the /y. It is for your data's safety in case of a typo. Believe me, you could end up with a non booting system if misused.

    Pardon me for sticking my nose in here. :)

    In the first place, I am wondering why you are using "find files and folders" for trying to empty the Temporary Internet Files. That is not a good way to do it. That feature is mainly for locating a particular file on the hard drive. Like when you forgot where you put something. If you are deleting files from within the "find files and folders" search feature, you could be deleting needed files if you are not very careful.

    You have beginner by your name, so therefore I am believing you are a beginner.

    Going into IE, Tools, & Internet Options & doing it the way Christer said is the best way for a beginner.
