Ever since the latest security patches that Windows Update had us do of which i had 2 around 10 Feb, i note in my OE6 email:

When i am typing in an email reply and hit the ENTER key within my reply paragraph i get an error message and lose all i had typed. This never happened ever before.
I note others having same problem now too as i went and asked on MSN Win98 Outlook Express newsgroup support list and others had same happening, but no fix yet.... :(

I need to resolve this ASAP as i reply to a lot of email and it is frustrating to lose all your work as i hit ENTER key automatically in paragraphs or going to make another paragraph.....HELP!!!!

    The error msg says:

Have you tried repairing IE(OE is tied to it) via the control panel, add/remove programs? I've put that same patch on three computers with no ill effects. All running Win98 IE/OE6.

Enter key error in OE since Window Update patch

    Thank you to:

    aleekat:
I had no problem before though and i have Win98se and IE6 and OE6.
Yes i did the IE repair as you ask.
I also did the OE Inbox Repair Tool.
I still have the problem. Many people may not notice they have a problem until you type a reply and click ENTER key 'within' a paragraph or when making another paragraph. It seems to happen at a certain spot when you hit the ENTER key....

    Welshjim:
Yes i had done the google search looking up mshtml.dll errors and noted other reasons than mine for this error.
I also had gone to microsoft.com free support as well as the newsgroup message board they have there. Like i said on that you can see others had same happen and yet no answer back from anyone at microsoft on it.

Soooooo still no clue yet. Hopefully someone can figure it out sooooooon. Thanks, J :(

crystalwoman--Sorry to hear you still have the problem. I assume you have closed OE and restarted, but that the problem remains. Typing in OE is flaky for me from time to time (though not exactly the problem you have). It usually cures itself when I reboot.
Is this only happening when you Reply? (Not that I have a solution regardless what you answer, but maybe others will. )
You could try reading/posting at the Tomsterdam newsgroup site, too.
    http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/contact.htm
And here is the Home Page for Tomsterdam which has a lot of general info on OE

still have MSHTML.DLL error msg in OE

    Welshjim:

Yes i still have this annoying problem and some others have it still as well. From what i understand Microsoft owes us a "patch for a patch." :(

I cannot say at this point if it happens when typing New Email.
I only know it happens in My Reply to people in the same email they had sent me. I will be typing along and hit the ENTER key to make a new paragraph and it seems if i hit it within a paragraph that is when i get that MSHTML.DLL msg.

I have checked around more since posting here too and had noted quite a few on the 'msn.support newsgroup for OE' have same problem and said the bug came with one of those last 2 Windows Updates.

One lady said patch #810847 fixed hers which is not specifically for this 'bug.' Others who tried it though said it did not fix them.
I have not tried to patch it with that especially since Microsoft has not sent us the "patch for their patch."

I posted this problem here thinking others would have same problem since the last 2 mid-Feb Windows Updates. However i guess i am the only one here with this problem.

Microsoft best reply ASAP since there is not yet any reply from them on this new security update bug.

For now i will keep searching as like i said it is most annoying and slowing to me for my research. I reply to a number of genealogy emails and like to type my replies within their query paragraphs.
Thanks again for sharing and i will check the latest links you sent too.

    Happy Trails, J

ENTER key error only in reply email

    Hi again:

Still no reply from Microsoft on the MSHTML.DLL error that occurs in my OE6 when i hit the ENTER key to make a new paragraph when typing a reply in the same email that i had received from someone. It does not happen when i type New Email.

It has been happening only since one of the 2 latest Windows Updates 'messed' up my OE6.

Sooooo they still need a Patch for a Patch in this case. Maybe a lot of people do not reply within an email received, so they may not know they have this 'bug' that Microsoft has in one of their latest patches. I happen to reply like this in my OE6 a lot through my genealogy research.

Just letting you know i am still 'in the dark' with this latest problem i received due to so many continuous updates Microsoft has us do. I was fine until this. I have found that same scenario too many times before. I go along happy and smoothly and they insist i do another update or patch and then something new shows up in my programs.

    Happy Day, J

 Well unforunatley we both have or should say had the same problem. I'm running Win XP and I have system restore, so what I did was go back to the day before I installed the two patches and now IE works fine. I'm not sure if 98 as system restore if not I'm not sure what you can do. This was effecting both IE and my Juno, but not Yahoo. I've got both the 810847 and the 810577 also the 811630 sitting in my computer ready to go, but I haven't re installed them. I might try one at a time and see what happen. Well good luck if In anything I'll try to get back to you

Sorry to hear you have this latest Microsoft Patch bug and yet it is comforting to know i am not alone with this.

I figure more must have this same bug especially if they did the latest Windows Update installments and do not realize it yet.

If more people find out they too have it and all let Microsoft know, the faster we can get this "patch for the patch."

For now i am waiting to be more assured of what can be done to fix this. I love Outlook Express 6 and would not want another email program, so hopefully they will fix this soon.

I am not sure about my Win98se having that 'system restore' as you say you have. I maintain and update my computer keeping it in good condition, but i am not an expert on all it has and can do.

For now i am having to type 'new email' to reply to my colleagues instead of replying right on their email as i used to do.

If you do find out which one(s) gave us the 'bug' please let us know. Hoping this can be resolved ASAP.

    Happy Trails, J

To see if you have Sytem Restore go to Start button, click on Programs, Accessories, system tools, System Restore should be down the bottom or in that window. Now wheather or not you have it turned on that another question. You could also try Start and Find and type in system restore and let it search to see if you have it. Good Luck because this as saved me more times than I can count. I'll let you know what happens once I try one of the patches. Juno was actting crazy on me last night, but heard the whole internet system was actting crazy so before I try one of the patch I'll have to check and make sure I don't have another problem

    Hi again:

Still here waiting for Microsoft to reply.

I have found others complaining of same problem on www.microsoft.support.com too.

I do not have System Restore and i guess WindowsXP is the only one then.

I am learning to be be patient. For now, i copy and paste the email text that i am replying to in New Mail and it does not happen and i reply on that.
It only happens on the original email that i received and if i reply right on that and go to make a paragraph in or within one as i press the ENTER key to do so.

I will keep checking different tech support sites and msg boards re: 'bugs' in Microsoft that people note.

Hope soon we hear they have a 'patch' for this.

Although i am sorry to hear that you are suffering from this problem, i am "relieved" to discover that i am not the only one.

My experience is almost *identical* to yours. I am running W98SE, IE/OE6 (with all the patches and updates), and i started receiving a very similar (just some of the numbers are different) error message when replying to e-mail. (I first noticed this happening on February 09. I had just come home after spending a few days in hospital, but i remember having installed the latest patch(es) before i left on February 06). Somehow MSHTML.DLL has turned on me, and won't allow me to send a response without hitting "Ctrl + S" every few words.

The error always happens immediately after hitting the "Enter" key (and it's kinda hard to write an e-mail without hitting the "Enter" key.)

I did the same Google search, asked every geekly person i knew, but could find nothing to help me.

One slight difference : my OE will crash when writing a *new* e-mail as well as a reply.....but this happens much less frequently. So far it has only happened once or twice, compared with almost every time when writing a reply - sometimes several times in a single reply (if i remembered to save a partial copy to the Drafts folder). (Maybe you have just been lucky so far?)

For long e-mails i have taken to copying and pasting into WordPad (which, so far, has *not* crashed and burned on me).

I hope that Microsoft will hear our pleas for help. Because writing e-mail has become a horrible and frustrating experience since the second week in February..........

    Hello to all!

I don't know if this will help or not.

Occassionally I have had problems replying to certain e-mails (not the same problems you and others are reporting but annoying). As I think about this, I believe the 2 or 3 times that I had my problem(s) I also had other problems which nessesitated (spelling is NOT my strong suit!) re-installing Win 98 SE. When I have had to do this, I had to do it from the "C:\" prompt, not with Windows running, or my "other" problems weren't fixed.

Yes, it IS a pain in the butt, because then you have to go and update everything and it takes hours (at least at 56K...). But it stopped my problem(s).

I don't know IF it will help / fix this problem or not. But, if you've got the time...

Microsoft removed this patch(MS03-004) from windows update(WU) for W98, a few days ago, probably to fix MSHTML.DLL. As they have done before with other patches, they will post it back to WU and reissue and note revisons on all docs. Article 810847(dated 2/12/03) is still available and has links which can be use to obtain the old patch(dated 2/5/03), if some wants it

salb--Very interesting!! How do you know that? Since I already downloaded and installed the February Cumulative Patch, I cannot test whether Windows Update still offers it.
The MSKB article and Security Bulletin make no mention of a withdrawal of the recommendation for Win98. (Of course they never did say Win98, but rather Win98SE, even though I was offered the Patch when I went to WU.)

    All;

If anyone has definitive information on a fix for the botched "patch ", could you please post it here? I'd greatly appreciate it.

I'm just about to give up on OE and try a different e-mail program.....

Actually, that reminds me - i did try a different program : IncrediMail. But the exact same error - the MSHTML.DLL invalid page fault - happened the exact same way as with OE. Any thoughts about that? Is IncrediMail just a different "front end" for Outlook Express?

And does anyone know of a freeware e-mail program that is immune from Microsoft glitches?

    This is from MS03-004
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-004.asp

    =========copy/paste==========

Subsequent to the initial release of this bulletin, a non-security issue was discovered with this patch that could affect some users - primarily consumers - under certain conditions. Specifically, the issue could cause some users to be unable to authenticate to certain Internet web sites such as subscription based sites, or MSN e-mail. This issue has been resolved, and a hot fix (813951) issued to correct it. It is important to note that this hot fix corrects a very specific non-security issue, and that the security patch discussed in this Security Bulletin was, and still is, effective in removing the vulnerabilities discussed later in this bulletin. More information, including details of how to obtain the hot fix are available at: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/813951/default.asp and in the Frequently Asked Questions section of this bulletin.
    ======end copy/paste===========

I haven't installed the Feb 2003 patch for IE5.5sp2 because I feared that Microsoft would not offer any "botched patch" fixes for Win95. I'm afraid I've reached the end of the line with IE and Win95.

I rarely use OE for e-mail (my husband uses it). I use Mozilla 1.0.1 or Netscape (4.79) Messenger for email. I wold avoid Incredimail... see http://www.langa.com/newsletters/2002/2002-10-10.htm#6

The Feb 2003 IE patch disables some HTML Help (HH) functionality, supposedly only with the 'showhelp' scripting function and Microsoft has offered an HTML Help "patch" for that . See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=811630

The HTML Help patch is only offered on Windows Update and Win95 users can't install it anyway, since from what I've gathered the new version of the HTML Help Engine (v1.4) doesn't work under Win95. My hh.exe file (version tab, Internal Name) shows 'HH 1.32'.

In any case here is one NG post I found on the Outlook Express error in MSHTML.DLL which occurs for some people after they apply the Feb 2003 patch:

    =====copy/paste==========

Subject: Re: MSIMN invalid page fault
    Newsgroups: microsoft.public.internet.mail

Some people who have recently installed the following update have an intermittent problem while typing a new message where MSIMN causes error in MSHTML.DLL
MS03-004: February, 2003, Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=810847

Microsoft is aware of the problem and working on a fix. However, since the problem hits only some people, they are having difficulty identifying the exact combination of causes.

A few people have indicated that installing the following further update seems to help, where as others still have the MSHTML problem.

ENTER key in OE6 replies still causes error

I still have same problem still. I wrote Microsoft near 4x now and 2-3x on the Alert on the tech site. No reply still. No 'patch for their patch' yet.

I know one of the 2 updates 811630 & 810847 had this 'bug' which has caused my OE6 replies to do this ENTER key error. I was fine before this. I always type my replies back in HTML in my emails received all the time and in between paragraphs too and never had a problem.

I thought maybe they finally were fixing it the other day as i got a notice for a Windows Update to do, but it was 813951, which still is not the patch i need.

I again this a.m. told them we still need the patch for this. Hope everyone has told them same, so we can get this solved.

If you already tried the 813951 update and it didn't help then just sit tight and wait for Microsoft to issue a fix or try the following suggestion:
    ==========copy/paste=============
    From: Jim Pickering (jimp@mvps.org)
Subject: Re: Windows Update made MSHTML.DLL error in OE reply when ENTER key is hit
    Newsgroups: microsoft.public.win98.internet.outlookexpress
    Date: 2003-02-18 18:40:04 PST

It is a bug caused by the update patches. Microsoft is aware of it and has been working for some time to fix it. Hopefully it will be soon. Users
with WinMe and XP systems have been using System Restore to roll back to a
time before installing the patches but that's of no help to you with a Win98
    system. Sorry.

You can try searching for an older version of mshtml.dll (your present
version is most likely 1141) and replace the existing one with the older one while in Safe Mode (look for version 1126). That also has fixed it for many users.

To summarize(and clarify my previous post):

On Feb 12th, MS revised the platforms to which article 810847 & MS03-004 applied.

    The original (2/6/03) listed 21 platforms(various combinations of IE 6, 5.5,5.01 and window operating systems). On 2/12/03 it listed only 9. This change removed a lot of senerios including IE5.5 sp2 with w95, w98, w98se, w2K, & wNT4.0, as well as IE6(no sp) with w98, w98se, wME, w2K, wNT4.0 & wXP 64bit. It also removed IE6 w sp1 with wME.

It you had not applied the patch before(I usually delay appling MS Patches) and you went to Win update with one of the removed combinations above...no patch will show up.

As far as the affect if you did previously apply the patch, you need to look at dates(based on your senerio) of the DLLs listed in the article 810847 and you will see that are of 2002 vintage June thru Dec. These were probably there BEFORE you applied this patch. They came from other patches you applied last year.
