Got a few questions before I make a few suggestions.

    What model/make is your Thinkpad?

What did you install or uninstall on January 26th?

What option do you have for the action performed when you hit your shutdown button? You can check this by right clicking a blank area of desktop and selecting properties>screen saver tab>Monitor Power Category_hit the Power button>Should be a section that allows you select the action performed when you hit the shutdown button. What does this say ie; "Shutdown, suspend, hibernate?

I can't help but notice that you still have applications and programs running that you have previously been given instructions for disabling. Perhaps a review and a study up on the links previously provided deserves a second look.

Since everyone seems to be on-line and in this post at various times perhaps during one of the times when your here and no one seems to be active in your post you may wish to look at some of the references in the "Archives ". This is help-nets database of past posts and fixes. Suggest using shutdown as a keyword filter and limited search to the win98 forum. This will lead to several "shutdown troubleshooters" with informative and helpful sublinks that may pin this down:

    help-net search

As Daizy previously stated this can be a hard, tedious problem to track down. It has to have been one of the most common complaints for win98 forum for quite a long spell. Sometimes you can luck out and clearup the problem with something as easy as disable "Fast Shutdown" or applying the win98 "Shutdown Patch" [later offered by MS.com] and other times it took a great deal of hardware & software updating and patching. Could be a corrupted or over written file. Could be a case of opening an older 16 bit application that will load and share a wrong version of a shared file/driver. Hince when win tries to close the application at shutdown, it can't. The coded information needed for the 32 bit app is not in the 16 bit driver/dll or is incorrect.

I have been a little hesitant in getting to involved in this post as Laptops fall into the "Unknown and Uncharted Territory" for me. They tend to have there own set of special quirks.

Throw in the couple of Chinese programs you seem to have such as "bdhelper" and Richwin 2000 and I am really in unfamiliar waters. Sure wish your error was a bit more informative.....

Without reviewing post, when you turn on computer, without opening or running anything and choosing to shutdown, does the OS shutdown?

This may or may not be relavant to Wings' case but is related to not shutting down.

One of Ol' BillyBob's Machines had aquired this NASTY Habit.

when you turn on computer, without opening or running anything and choosing to shutdown, does the OS shutdown?

    No it did not.

As a starting place it * APPEARS at this time * as though it might have been caused by a mis-behaving screen saver starting file.

When I went to change or shut off the screensaver it had a monitor with a big red X in the window. It usually shows the SS. Made a change and it has shutdown properly 4 times in a row now.

But if indeed it was an SS problem it had to be with the file that starts the SS which is listed in the System.ini. ( Line that contains the selected SS ) Or a mis-match between SS and Video drivers.

I have changed the Video card lately and thinking back that is when the problem started.

Ain't it just amazing what will mess up things.

Will see what happens and if the problem does not stay fixed I will see what else I can find and come back.

    Hi, I run Windows 98 Second Edition, I couldn't shut down either, was having to shut down manually, and I hated seeing that blue warning {because your computer wasn't shut down properly it may have errors. . . .}

For two years now I have not seen that warning, because quite by accident, and since two years is a long time to remember, I can't tell you what happened. . . but I discovered that when I was ready to shut my computer down, {if, I clicked shut down at the start button then "on the menu that pops up click restart, OK." I let it go through until I see my desk top, agai, then go back..... to start, click shut down, when the menu pops up again, "click shut down OK, and it shuts down. "

    I hope this helps,

    Hi wing,

This happened to me also. I run windows 98 Second Edition, 5.0. What I do is go to and press Start. Click Shut down, on the pop up menu, " click restart, OK." I let it run until I see my desk top. Then go back to and Press Start again cleck, " on shut down, OK" and my computer shuts down!. Seems you are about to the end of your rope, try it it might work.:) I hope so.

Looks like a re-install of Window may be next in line.
