    Appreciate some assistance.

Helping someone with a Compaq 7360 (OS: W98SE)

It has one hard drive, but partitioned into C:\, and a "Compaq Partition" D:\.

If corrupted files (affected by a virus, or otherwise) need to be restored, should one go to this "Compaq Partition" to restore them through SFC?

The guy also has a "Restore CD ".

Not sure which one to use...

Not exactly versed on Compaq. Not my PC of choice!

There wouldn't be much danger of getting any viral infection into the Compaq partition since it's never actively written to nor does it have an OS installed. Generally virus confine themselves to the OS or the memory areas.

The only problem would possibly would be that the file on the drive was too old to cut the mustard with some newer software but that would then require the software in question to be installed again. I don't see any real danger.

    Thanks for the reply.

Have not made my question clear.

If files in the C:\ partition become corrupted, etc. can one go to the Compaq D:\ partition to get these files, or to the Restore CD?

Don't quite know what in the world is in this Compaq partition, or what is its use.

I understand now, thanks for the clarification. If you do not have a win98 install disk, you will not be able to extract any files using SFC to replace corrupt or missing one on the Compaq OS. That's one of the drawbacks to their approach of offering only a Quick Restore disk. You can only reload the system to original factory specs and that will require you to reload all your added programs and files. (tip: borrow a win98 disk)

That has applied to all the Compaqs I have ever fooled with but I can't say that it covers all of them. Stay tuned and perhaps someone knows something specific about your particular model that would give you some other relief.

    Good luck.

    This is from
    http://www29.compaq.com/falco/detail.asp?FAQnum=FAQ2747
(I'm thinking if you do have a C:\Windows\Options\Cabs folder then you can restore files using that location instead of a Win98 CD-Rom)

    Thanks for the replies.

Am I on the right track?

Looks as if the Windows 98 files are located in the system restore partition (presume it is the extra partition), the QuickRestore CD, and in the C:\Windows\Options\Cabs folder on the hard drive.

If any files need replacement, supposedly could go to the above.

(Do have a W98SE CD of my own, if all else fails.):D

    I would look in C:\Windows\Options\Cabs.

Here is some of what I found with a groups.google search:

    Hi John,

Compaq usually places the system files in a folder like
C:\windows\options\cabs directly on the hard drive for use. To locate
yours, click start/find/files and search for win98*.cab. When prompted
to insert the Win98 CD during a program installation, click "cancel" and
redirect the search to the folder you just located.

This problem occurs because Compaq uses an proprietary "image" rather
than a normal setup routine on their restore disks. The Win98 files are
generally not accessible from the image.

    Hi,

That file should be on your hard drive under:

    C:\windows\options\cabs\driver11.cab

The installer probably can't find it on the CD as the disk is in a
proprietary "recovery" format - basically it is an image of the system
as it existed when you purchased the machine. It cannot be used to
extract single system files. That is why your maker put them on the hard
    drive.
