Here's a good one. I clean installed XP Home and all went well for 2 days. Now when I click a .exe file, or start some programs, or insert a cd, I sometimes get the message "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive\Device\Harddisk1\DR2." This even comes up after the main screen appears for a CD. I don't get it. Any help? Thanks in advance, Neil DeRisi:confused:

I am getting exactly the same as you, but only with *.mov files (Quicktime movie files) although I do not have an answer I have put some images onto a web page at:

    www.bristow.paul.btinternet.co.uk/errors/image.htm

This may prompt some replys to the problem what I do not understand is that in my case it refers to:

    Harddisk2 DR2
    Harddisk3 DR6
    Harddisk4 DR7

I only have 2 fixed drives "C" and "D" and by hitting "continue" for a number of times I can sometimes launch the application.

    Hi Neil, paulbristow

Taking a stab at this, will address from paulbristow view since it has a starting point. Go to "QuickTime ".exe and right click... select "properties" Look at the "target" view. Does the path start with "C" or different dirve? Might also want to do the same on any ".mov" files

Checked for that only shows Location: C:\Program Files\QuickTime which is correct.

Hey Dennis, thanks for your time and support. One strange thing, XP named my hard drive F instead of C. I checked all my program .exe and shortcuts and they are looking for F, so that's not a problem. In help and support it says the PC can use certain letters for HD Id so I guess it's ok. Any other ideas? Thanks, Neil

    Hi guys

Do a google search on this phrase
Please insert a disk into drive\Device\Harddisk1\
Brings up a list of "same error condition ". Tried to do normal "http//" insert mode for the google URL completed search, but when used, displayed empty google screen with correct URL path??? So just copy paste the "lookup phrase" into a google search screen.

    UPDATE -------------------
Have either of you used /installed ZIP drives? Seems XP has issues.
See Article Q304776. Three different threads pointed to ZIP drive related problem/solution. See this post

I don't have a Zip, but my mobo has an add on memory card reader w/ 2 usb ports that are assigened drives letters as removable drives. I wonder if this is the problem. I'll see what I can come up with. If you find anything please reply. Thanks again Dennis.

    Hi Neil D

Here is another Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 330137. It has additional resolutions to resolve the problem... per Zip's. Possible will give you more insight to your card reader interface.

    Hi Neil

Found a Post that refers to same problem... has Zip and also states SAME problem with a USB attached Olympus Smart Media reader.. See also replying post.. zip drive... that a temp solution is to "leave a disk" in the Zip drive.

I put a Zip cardridge in my internal zip drive, (Drive 'E') and when clicking on *.mov file in explorer I only had the error message twice (as opposed to 3), I then unplugged my USB Belkin card reader which supports 2 drives 'F' & 'H' although 'H' is set to be hidden via TweakUI, and clicking on the *.mov file it ran with no errors.

Problem has gone away, but I do not want to leave a Zip drive in my drive and I certainaly do not wish to unplug my USB card reader all the time, as this has never happened before I will have to investigate further, also it only happens with *.mov files, uninstalled QuickTime (latest version) and reinstalled but still remains the same, also checked file types associated with QuickTime and they are fine.

Just a thought but after looking in XP's event viwer I have noticed the following in the system folder:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: ACPI
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 5
    Date: 22/02/2003
    Time: 13:06:41
    User: N/A
    Computer: PAUL
    Description:
AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to write to an illegal IO port address (0x4d1), which lies in the 0x4d0 - 0x4d1 protected address range. This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance.

Could this have anything to do with it?

    Paul

    Hi guys

    paulbristow
ACPI has simularities to driver software. It provides an exchange of information between OS and an device per power management and status information for said device. If solutions can not be achieve using MS Knowledge Base information, I would suggest contacting your hardware provider for your Zip drive and or memory card reader. In addition check your BIOS and MOBO provider for possible solutions. This issue appears to begin at OS/device relationships early in the bootup process. IF these relationships are unique to XP, possible looking for compatability solutions via 2K or lower OS's. With luck, possible a poster(s) who has "been there/fixed that" will chime in with some working solutions. Keep us posted with your progress. Good luck.

    Hi People it's fixed.

Ok here's what happened. Even though my drive was labeled F and all software was installed on F, some programs were looking to get info from drive C which was one of my usb ports or removable drives. I bought a 120 gb Maxtor Hd, so when I installed it, I wiped the 60gb, reinstalled XP and made sure it was the C drive. After that I could reletter all the other drives as I wanted them, and all is well in my world. Thanks for all the help, reading your posts, though maybe not related to my solution, got me thinking and looking at it from all different angles. Thanks to all who posted you really helped me big time!!
