    Hi,
I recently reformatted and reinstalled win2k on a friends machine
(see post never finishes booting) all was fine when I gave it back to him, but now he has a problem with both his cd and dvd rom.
they're not reconised by windows, and show up in device manager as drivers not installed.
I had a similar problem with the hard drives on my p.c. a while ago
and managed to fix it by pointing them to the correct .inf files
but this hasn't worked on this machine.
I'm sure there must already be a post on this, but after extensive searching, i can't find it ; (
    any ideas?

    thanks in advance. Chris

Windows 2000 is really picky about device drivers. Try going to the manufacturer's website for the cdrom drives and downlaod the latest drivers for them. See if that works.

As CD's do not need any extra drivers, this sounds like a Motherboard driver problem to me...although I could be wrong, I am sometimes a bit thick.

Go to your motherboard website and get the latest drivers,,then re-install the service packs

Hmmmm - Spotta, This Site lists over 200 places to get CD/DVD ROM drivers for various brands which makes me think they probably do need drivers.

Last time I checked windows used its own driver for cdrom devices. The thought on the motherboard drivers is a good idea too. Keep us updated on how it goes.
