    DEMON FINDS

OK mflynn! I have run the - REGCLEANER - AD-AWARE - DEMON - EASYCLEAN AND SPYBOT - TWICE! I have never booted DOS before - so I chickened out on those commands - sorry. Here is waht the Demon found - IEBRW.DLL/HOMEPAGE.DLL/DAPBHO.DLL.
Thanks for your help and advice! I noticed when I was downloading that my transfer rate was way down to about 1kps? I usually get about a 3-4 rate - anyway - I got this accelerator - and it only went up to 4-5kps - is that about right could I do better - remember I only have a dial-up and 56k modem. Again - thanks. You know you sounded a little mad at me there in that last post - hope not. kingsr1 M

    No no not mad!

Sometimes people just don't like the answer and need a little jolt!

Just trying to make you understand.

Downloading from a particular site at a particular time and depending on your connection to your ISP at that time will vary.

45-48k is a good modem speed.

Your problem now is you have or had a Virus!

    See this: http://vil.mcafee.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=100052
    http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/Print100052.htm

Here is how to delete them:
    http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/Searchex.html

This item (in itself classed faily harmless) is classed as a Browser Hijack but also as a trojan so it could invite in some other baddies.

In BHODemon Download Accelerator is (dapbho.dll) the other two come with a Virus. So in BHODemon click these 2 files and delete.

Only after you have done both steps above search the HD and delete these files.

? Did you download the latest Spybot and Adaware6 and did you config them to max setting deep scans and compressed files? Because both should remove these? Did you skimp here and run the old ones?

Also do this before you update and run your own virus scanner. D/L and run these 2

    Special Virus cleaners

    Stinger http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
    PQremove http://www.webmasterfree.com/software/2911.html

These are the Delta force for only the newest and most prolific viruses today.
Use these if it is possible that a virus may have disabled your regular scanner.
For a quick clean, and then if they find and clean anything do a full deep scan with a full-fledged scanner.
If you suspect a virus has disabled your regular scanner you should do 3 things

    1. Download STINGER and PQREMOVE and run them. NOTE: always download them do not run an older one that you have had; these 2 are updated almost daily.

    2. Do an online dedicated Trojan/worm scan and online regular virus scan.

    3. If your virus scanner was up to date, and "IF" either 1 or 2 above finds a virus then it is possible that your virus scanner has been disabled. You should completely uninstall and reinstall your virus scanner update it and run it in full mode with max settings.

After you have done all above update your Virus scanner and do a full scan.

    Mike

PS You should still do the DOS cleanups. Only this will clean certain things.

    MS-DOS!

Hi Flynn! First thing - my dos is not working - somehow I restricted my system and it will not run dos stuff! Next - I used the Demon thing first last time - so I think those viruses got deleted by one of the following things I ran! I notced that my homepage was not opening to MSN and instead to some search page. Now I know why - but it is not doing that anymore so maybe it is gone.? I did do th Stinger scan anyway - but I think the virus is gone . I have PC-CILLIN as my anti-virus and it updates itself all the time. Thanks again. M

Here is a little tip that will free up some ram whenever you close a program that loads Dll files. Windows has a habit of keeping them in memory, but this will tell windows to get rid of Dll's in memory that are not actively being used. Create the key below in the registry and set the default [string] as 1. It reportedly works with all versions of windows.

    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\AlwaysUnloadDLL]
    @= "1 "

It works fine on my machine, and do notice an immediate release of memory.

    CREATE KEY IN REGISTRY

Hey 62! Sounds like a graet idea - but - I don't know how to " create a key in registry" sorry - I really have no clue about so much that you and the others - like flynn - are talking about but I am learning. I tried run>REGEDIT - and it didn't work. Was that the way to do it? Please explain and I will try. Thanks for your help - I know I must be a real challenge to help. M

Copy the following and paste it into Notepad.

    REGEDIT4

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr
    entVersion\explorer\AlwaysUnloadDLL
    @= "1 "

Save it as "unloaddll.reg" including the quotes!
Open explorer, go to where you saved it, and double click it.
    Done.

I don't know what you have done with tweakers and setting restrictions for yourself but not having many of the abilities you'll need for basic windows survival disturbs me.

You should have been able to run regedit by typing this onto your startmenu>run line.

    Perhaps this will help:
    To restore Regedit.exe:
    1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Notepad.
    2. Copy the following bolded text and paste it into the Notepad window.

    REGEDIT4
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
    "DisableRegistryTools "=dword:00000000

    3. Click File, and click Save. Save the file to the Desktop as RegedFix.reg.

    4. Exit Notepad.

    5. Locate and double-click the RegedFix.reg icon on the desktop to import the changes into the registry.

    6. When you are prompted, click Yes, and then click OK.

    7. Restart the computer.

This should allow the use of regedit once again.

Once you can do this I think you need to have a look into all your policy Hkeys to see what any tweaker, trojan or virus may have added as restrictions.

This link should give you a pretty good idea of where these policy keys can be found and what the values control:

When you copy and paste those lines in Notepad; First have Word Wrap unchecked, you'll find it under Edit in the toolbar of Notepad. Here is a little hint about pasting those lines. You will notice the word CurrentVersion is broken up. When you paste you will need to get that word joined up with the rest of the line so that the sentence between the [brackets] is all one line. The next line beginning with the quotation is all one line.
To save it, choose Save As, name it "Anyname.Reg" with the quotes. This is important to keep Notepad from saving it as a text file. While you can read it as text, the reg extension has a special meaning. When done correctly and viewed in Windows Explorer, under File Types it will be called Registration Entries.
What you are doing is creating a Reg file. It is a way of inserting and editing data in the registry without opening Regedit. You just double click the file, and you will get a message box asking if you want to Merge it into the registry.

    Sheesh....

Sorry everybody and thank you mark62. I was patting my head and rubbing my belly at the same time [cooking dinner and reading/posting_on the board]. Seems doing these two divided my attention which lead to sloppiness. I didn't even notice the syntax glitch or the fact that Mchaak has classified him/herself as a beginner. The explanations you have provided for what will be done with a reg patch should have been included. I don't do this to often but I sure am glad someone is there to pick up the slack. Thank you once again mark62.

How about a reg patch download that will do the same thing. Just download to desktop and unzip to said same. This will give you a readme and a reg patch entitled "unlock.reg ". Just do what the readme says. No muss, no fuss.

The above patch courtesy of one of our board members and moderators. Thank-you Plansdowne
Here's his site with various patches that may come in handy at some point:

    EVERYBODY!!

THANK YOU ALL! Just one note - I don't know how to cut/copy/paste! I know - I know. I did find the Notepad though - and I just typed in the message that reboot gave me - and in the exact way - lines broken in same places and all the same set up. And it seemed work!? No error or rejsect messages anyway. So is that it? I want to thank you all - goddez1 and 62 and all! As you can see - I don't know much at all about theses things - so it is hard to follow your tips - but I try. I still would like to know how to get the restriction on dos lifted if anyone knows how. I used so many different devices to tweak and optimise with it is impossible to know which one I did it with - so I need another way to fix it or reverse it or whatever. Thanks again guys and gals. ;)

    You are welcome, goddez1.

If for some reason a reg file doesn't work due to regedit not working, when you are starting the computer, repeatedly press the F8 key or the CTRL key. It is best to do this right when you see the line 'Starting Windows 98' on the screen, after the BIOS has done the memory test [if any] and some hardware detection. If done successfully, you will see a black screen with white letters, with startup options available. Choose Safe Mode. You will find NO restrictions on you. Then double click the reg file.
Safe Mode can be your friend, while you cannot get on the internet or much else. It can be used to get yourself out of a 'fix'.

Another tip, you have 5 backups of your registry on your computer. One for each day that you turn it on. It is probably too late to use one of them now, doubtless you had these problems more than the 5 days.
    To use this you will have to use the above method and choose Command Prompt Only or Restart in Dos Mode to access the backups. You would type the following line at the prompt;

    scanreg /restore

You will see a screen appear, showing these backups, you would choose one, the most recent is usually the better choice, or the one from the day before, depending on what happened, using the arrow keys, . Once one is highlighted you press enter. You will get a message the backup was restored and to reboot the computer.
But this command is like a double edged sword, if a program was installed in one of these backups, and no longer exists, error messages will appear. Likewise, if you had installed a new program after the backups was made, it would have to reinstalled.
Here are a couple more commands using the same program.

    scanreg /fix
The intent of this one is obvious, won't help in this case.

    scanreg /opt
Optimizes the registry by taking out empty space.

Good luck to you! I think in a couple of days you will not want to classify yourself as a beginner, as you are getting a crash course on how to get yourself out of a jam.

    MCHAAK,
To copy, highlight what you want to copy and then use ctrl + C.

To paste, place your cursor where you want the copied data and use ctrl + V.
