After I boot up the PC and just before the desk top appears I get a box titled , welcome to windows, along with a symbol of a key.

the message is: type a user name and password to log on to windows. I have found to click on cancel to get around it however, I would like to get rid of it.

Open Network Neighborhood, change the logon to Windows logon, not MS Family logon.

reboot, I went to control panel, to networks,to configuration,to click on family and click on remove.
I did not see network neighborhood nor did I see windows logon.
I did see client for microsoft networks.
no doubt I did not follow your instructions. I must need some elementary instructions. Thank you for your effort.

It is so easy to confuse Network Neighborhood with Network.
Go into Control Panel\Network, a window will open. You will see in the middle of it a line saying Primary Network Logon with Client for Microsoft Networks in the box, change to Windows Logon, not Microsoft Family Logon unless you want to logon everytime.

    Mark is quite correct.
To change to Windows Logon you click the arrow to the right
of the Window he refers to that has "Client for Microsoft Networks" as the text in it.
When you click the arrow, you will get a drop down menu.
Just click Windows Logon and then click the OK button.
You may be asked for your WinSE CD ...
    regards

    markp62 I followed your directions I think.
first I got the window with (client for microsoft networks) at the very top. Then I in the middle I cliicked on the drop down menue selected windows logon, then OK. Then as the boot uo continued I got a message, (you have not loged on to this computer before would you like to save profile) which I ignored then I got the password box. I then went thru the procedure again this time I clicked yes on the question. Still on results, what am I doing wrong?

Log on to the computer the way you normally would.
    Right click Network Neighborhood.
    Select Properties.
NOW change the logon from MS Family to Windows logon.
    Click OK, restart.

You're halfway to removing your password. Now you need to delete any *.pwl files you may have in your c:\windows directory. Windows login also asks for a password. Delete the *.pwl files, then go to control panel -> passwords, and make sure that the computer is set so that all users must use the same settings. I believe it's on the users tab, but you'll find it in there easily. Then reboot and when it asks you for a username and password, leave the password blank and click 'OK' not cancel. It should never ask you again.
