Open regedit. Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
Look for "Download Directory" in the right hand pane, right click, select Modify, change it to any folder on your hard drive(s).
Do the same in HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Download Directory

If you meant Windows Explorer instead, changing the target line in the Shortcut Properties to explorer.scf will do it.

That's odd that your system doesn't have the explorer.scf file. Perhaps you need to use the full path C:\windows\explorer.scf due to your particular path statement in the Environmental Variables.

    Anyway, here's another method:

Copy and paste the following line into the target line of the Shortcut:

    C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE /n,/e,/root,,/select,C:\

That'd be my strong preference for doing this particular job. Mainly, so much easier to change later or to make multiple shortcuts that behave a little differently.

Take a look at HOW TO: Customize the Windows Explorer Views in Windows XP for more options.

Your reply intrigued me so I checked the properties of my Windows Explorer because it opens at the Start Menu under Doucuments and Settings. The

    Target is %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe

    Start in is Windows

I then created a shortcut and added the following:

    %windir%\EXPLORER.EXE /n,/e,/root,,/select,C:\

    Start in is %windir%

This shortcut brings me to the drive C as it should.

Any idea why WE opens at the start menu ? I do recall having changed the location several months ago, but I did a complete format and reinstall of XP a few weeks ago.

Could Newt or Zephyr please say what should be copied and pasted into the target line of the Windows Explorer shortcut, when using Win2K, so as to open with my D drive or, even better, with a particular D drive folder.

    Zephyr -

Many thanks - your method works beautifully.

At the risk of pressing my luck (I have just realised that this is an XP Forum - sorry), is there any way of controlling the Save In folder, which appears when clicking on Save As? I normally get C:\My documents, when what I would like is D:\My documents, where I keep most of my stuff.

That seems to vary by the software. E.g., WordPad will remember the last place you saved to and set it as the ongoing default. MSWord however sets a somewhat more permanent default "Save As" location. To change it you must open the program, click TOOLS > OPTONS > FILE LOCATONS and modify as you see fit. That applies to Word97 and may be different in your version but it'll be in there somehow I'm sure.

    And so it goes...

    Good luck. :)

My second thanks to you in just a few minutes. I had seen this modify button in Folder Options, but never had the courage to click on it!

    IMHO, the following is preferable:

    Target: C:\Windows\Explorer.exe /n,/e,C:\
    Start In: (leave blank)

    Regards,

Not quite sure what you mean by saying it opens at the start menu.
